NEW PLYMOUTH OPERA HOUSE.

VNNAPOLIS” AND “RINGING THE CHANGES?’

“Annapolis” and “Ringing the Changes,” two big pictures of merit, will show at the New Plymouth Opera (House to-night. “Annapolis” stars John Mack Brown, Jeannette Loff and Hugh Allen. It is an appealing romance about two midshipmen who are in love with the same girl and from start to finish it is packed with swift-moving action and tingling thrills. Henry Edwards is. starred in “Ringing the Changes.” In this picture he plays the role of a young English lord, who through impoverished circumstances, is forced to lease the old family scat— Remerton Castle—to a newly-rich family, the Guggleswicks, who are determined to “mix with society.” However, an unprincipled house agent learns of la treasure that is supposed to have beenconcealed within the castle, and together with one Foxley, he endeavours to locate the treasure, with the air of a girl who is acting as the GugglesWick’s secretary, and who is only too willing to help Stinson, the house agent, in some way, for his help that he once offered to her' She, i however, does not know that she is aiding Stinson In the theft of the treasure. When Lord Bemerton arrives as the butler, complications set in thick and fast resulting in a comedy that includes many exciting scenes. Margot Landa heads the supporting cast. There will be a gazette to open and the Opera House Orchestra will accompany the complete programme. THE PEOPLE'S TALKIES. MATINEE TO-DAY AT 2 P.M. irrepressible Glenn Tryon tries his Aand at running a summer hotel in “Barnum Was. Right,” Universal talking farce-comedy which commences at The People’s Talkies, New Plymouth, to-day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. His efforts bring down upon his head not only a hilarious set of complications, Ibut the hotel roof as well. Merna Kennedy is co-starred with Tryon. Parted from his girl on what was, to be his wedding day, Tryon sets out to retrieve both his sweetheart and his shattered fortunes. To do this, he baits his hotel with rumours of pirate treasure-and the “suckers” that nibble, include crooks, detectives and frenzied huntersi The “girl in the case” is charming Merna Kennedy of the famous titian hair. The excellent supporting cast includes Otis Harlan in a featured role, Basil Radford, Clarence Burton, Lew Kelly, Isabelle Keith and 'Gertrude Sutton. Del Lord directed with an unerring eye to action and humour. ‘Barnum Was Right” was adapted, from the successful Broadway farce of the same name, the dramatisation of a Hutchinson Boyd story. “Barnum Was Right” is one of the most amusing comedies that has fallen to Tryon in his career as a furi-'maker. It contains some of the funniest sequences that have ever been brought to the screen —and it works up to a hilarious climax that is entirely unexpected. The supporting shorts will include Universal' News, Empire Bulletin, “Mush Again” (two-reel talking comedy), “Cold Turkey” (Oswald cartoon) and “The Ace of Scotland Yard,” Chap. 9. EVERYBODY’S TALKIES. MATINEE TO-DAY AT 2 P.M. The new programme commencing at Everybody’s Talkies, New Plymouth, to-day at 2 p.m. and to-night at 8 p.m., will be headed by Mae Murray in an entirely new version of her previous great success, “Peacock Alley.” This “Peacock Alley” is an all-talking Tiffany production telling a story written by Carey Wilson especially for Miss Murray’s personality and. talents. As Claire Tree, a sensational dancer, Miss Murray has an opportunity to show her terpsichorrcan skill. The dances are photographed in technicolour to bring out their entire beauty. The Xavier Cugat Orchestra provides the dance music. Peacock Alley is the name by which is known the magnificent promenade in the fashionable Park-Plaza Jlotel. The hotel management has received many complaints from men guests of being accosted in Peacock Alley by women who .try to lure them to night clubs or speak casies. This practice threatens to ruin the reputation of the hostelry and the owners engage a new detective whose job depends upon his ability to stop it. When Claire Tree, innocent of the espionage of Peacock Alley, steps into the hotel and meets Clayton Saville in the playful mood of pretending to pick him up, she is watched by tho detective, who sees her apparently angle an invitation to eupper and then accompany Saville to his suite —and not leave until dawn. What develops after this provides “Peacock Alley” with a lively plot and some interesting situations. George Barraud plays the hero and other characters are portrayed by Jason Robards, Richard Tucker, W. L. Thorne, Phillips Smalley, Billy Bevan and E. 11. Calvert. The will include Fox Movietone News, “Outstanding Manners” (U.F.A. gem), “Up the Pole” (talking monologue), Boy Scouts’ jamboree aiAl Gordon Freeman (comedy and burlesque). Chapter 9 of “The Ace of Scotland Yard” will be an additional attraction at the matinee onlv.
