SEAMEN DESERT TURAKINA

CASES IN MAGISTRATE’S COURT. TRAFFIC OFFENCE CHARGES. Three seamen were charged in the Magistrate’s Court at New. Plymouth yesterday, before Mr. R. W. Tate, S.M., with deserting their ship, the Turakina. Charles Herbert Brogben and John Frederick Leonard were alleged to have left the vessel at New Plymouth on Monday and Stanley Ovington on Tuesday. Ovington was further charged with the theft of a blanket valued at 10s and a towel valued at Is 6d, the property of the New Zealand Shipping Company. The accused pleaded guilty to all charges and were sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment and ordered to be placed on their ship at Lyttelton. On the theft charge Ovington was convicted and discharged. An order for the return of the articles was made. In reply to the magistrate SeniorSergeant McCrorie said the company would have to pay the cost of transporting the men to the ship. Walter James Seoble, who was found on the licensed premises of the White Hart Hotel on Christmas Eve at 9.5 p.m. was fined 20s (costs 10s). OFFENCES OF MOTORISTS. .. Frederick Trueman, who did not appear, was fined £2 (costs 18s) for speeding in Devon Street on December 19. Reginald George Edwards, Stratford, who was the driver of a motorcar involved in a collision with Trueman’s motor-cycle, for failing to give way to right-hand traffic at the junction of Devon and Queen Streets, was fined £1 10s. (costs 10s). Henry Tapley Gaylard was fined £2 (Costs 18s) for failing to give way to right-hand traffic on December 19, at the corner of St. Aubyn and Egmont Streets. Henry Owen Gibbs was charged with driving a motor-cycle along Courtenay Street° at the intersection of Cover Street on December 27 in a manner which might have been dangerous to the public. He was fined 20s (costs 255). Harry Raymond Coster was fined £2 (costs 10s) on a charge of approaching the intersection of Devon and Brougham Streets on October 18 at a speed of more than 15 miles an hour.
