TARANAKI STOCK MARKET

CONDITIONS IN PAST WEEK BEEF PRICES REMAIN FIRM. DEMAND FOR MOST LINES GOOD. Newton King, Ltd., report:— Beef. —In reviewing the market in this section since our last report we find that prices throughout .remain firm, with insufficient supplies of ox beef offering to meet the demand, resulting in the majority of butchers’ requirements being fulfilled from the supplies of cow and heifer beef that are being quoted, the greater proportion of the sales being effected through the medium of private ■treaty, at the .following range of prices: —Heavy prime fat sows £l2 to £l3, lighter. sorts £lO to £ll, while limited supplies 'of ox beef are being purchased at up to £l5 for prime heavy sorts and from £l2 10s. to ’ £l3 10s., for lighter weights. With the good prices that are being maintained throughout this section farmers with odd fat cows for dis-' posal are strongly recommended to put them under the hammer, as good'prices' for good quality cattle are assured. Fat Sheep.—The prices in this section remain on a.par with those mentioned in our last report. Very little .is as yet doing with ewe and wether mutton .by works buyers, being due, no doubt, to the fact that the prices at present offering by freezing companies are not very encouraging; however, butche i are operating at figures slightly in advance of works 'prices, and 'their requirements are being fulfilled as follows: —Prime heavy fat wethers up to "285., lighter sorts 255.. : t0 265. 6d., best fat ewes'l9s. 6d., others 18s. Freezing -prices for. lamb remain unaltered, and further drafts, at the opening figures, have ;been got away during the week. . Store Sheep.—Good yardings of store lambs and'the breeding ewes are now coming forward, but for the most part the sales lack the briskness, that was in evidence at this period last year; however, vendors are more or less reconciled to the fact, that low prices are to be the order of the day, and for the most part full clearances are being effected at reduced rates. At Hawera on Thursday we submitted quite a good, yarding of .mixed sheep, but competition was not .brisk; however, quite a good clearance was effected at the fol-, lowing range of prices:—Full mouth ewes 19s. to 205,, woolly ewe lambs up; to 19s. 6d., shorn ewe lambs up to 175., shorn wether lambs up to 14s. 7d., mixed sex woolly lambs 14s. to 155., cull lambs up to 10s, 6d. Store Gattie. —■’With the feed that is prevalent for this period of the year,'the demand for’ practically every class in this section is good, find insufficient of a number of the classes are offering to meet the strong demand, /resulting in prices remaining firm throughout. The classes most keenly sought after are good young store cows and grown bullocks, while a fair inquiry also exists, for the younger male cattle. The firstmentioned class when put under the: hammer are subject to spirited competition and are quitted at prices pleasing to vendors, while very few of the latter, class are being yarded, and only limited numbers of well-bred cattle are being quoted for sale through the medium of private. treaty, resulting in ready sales being effected of any suitable lines that are offering. Prices for good coloured cattle range -from £lO 'to £ll, according to the condition, while mixed coloured sorts are changing hands at from £9 to £9 15s. During the week quite a number of small Tots of weaner steers have changed hands, the majority of the lines being Holstein and Holstein-Short-horn cross cattle, and the prices for well done sorts have ranged from £3 15s. to £4 55., while others have, realised from £3 to £3 10s. . Bulls. —Works, -buyers are operating very freely on this class, and where farmers chose to sell under the hammer much more pleasing results are .shown than anticipated, and with this fact in. evidence farmers are strongly recoin-: mended to yard their bulls -in preference', to selling privately. This is exemplified by the following range of prices that have been obtained in our open markets: —Extra heavy bulls £ll 10s. io £l2 10s., medium weights £8 to £9, others £5 to £6. Dairy Cattle. —A fair number of outside inquiries have already been received for in calf heifers, for purchase on a forward delivery basis, and in. the earlier part of this month a few sales were effected for delivery in March and April,, prices for which ranged from £lO to £ll 10s.; however, there has been little, if anything, doing -on this basis, -sinceour last report. Of course it is as yet early in the season for many sales of this class to be -expected, ibut it is anticipated that the demand' will be equally as strong as it was .last year, and farmers holding lines for disposal are almost assured of a firm market, especially for good quality cattle, .Weaner Heifers.—Good numbers of this class are being yarded at our various* fortnightly fixtures, but few top quality cattle are being included-in the .offerings, the yardings consisting to a great extent of mixed sorts, and these are changing hands at anything from £3 to £4 55., according .to the quality of the cattle. Fair numbers of sales of good cattle have been effected in the paddock, and prices for these have ranged from £4 10s. for good cattle and up to £5 ss. for extra choice sorts. Pigs.—Only fair numbers of this class are coming forward to our various centres, and with the strong demand that is in evidence, together with the fact that an advance of Id. per lb. for fats was announced during the week, prices for all classes remain very firm, and full clearances are being effected under spirited competition, at prices pleasing to. vendors and much in advance of those that were /ruling for this period last year.
