AUSTRALIAN EXPORTS FAIL

ADVERTISING ABROAD NEEDED. SERIOUS DECLINE TAKES PLACE. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Sydney, Jan. 18. From the year 1924-25 to 1928-29 exports of produce and merchandise from Australia fell from £159,937,124 to £140,942,670. This serious decline is not only with overseas countries but with the Dominions, and has resulted in the Minister of Markets, Mr. Maloney, asking Cabinet to establish a commercial intelligence service abroad. Officials attribute the present adverse trade balance to the fact that Australia had neglected to advertise extensively overseas. Between 1920 and 1928 the export trade to New Zealand fell from £5,059,779 to £3,868,281, while Canada’s exports to New Zealand correspondingly increased.
