EMPIRE FOOD SUPPLIES

BRITAIN TAKING MORE

LARGE WHEAT INCREASE FOREIGN QUOTA REDUCED Received Jan. 5, 5.5 p.m. British Wireless. Rugby, Jan. 16. Striking facts and figures about Britain s food supplies are contained in a Blue Book issued to-day. Dealing with changes between pre-war and post-war supplies, the Ministry of Agriculture adopts for the purposes of comparison the years 1965 to 1910 and 1924 to 1927, respectively, as representing periods for which accurate statistics are most readily available. The most noticeable fact emerging from the analysis is the extent to which Dominion supplies of food have increased. There has been a substantial increase in re; ceipts of wheat from British countries, and despite the diminution in the contribution from home-grown v/heat, the proportion of the total supply derived from Empire sources in the post-war period exceeds 60 per cent., 'compared with 50 per cent, in the pre-war period. Fost-war wheat and flour supplies from Canada are three times the pre-war volume. The Empire’s barley consignments to Britain have multiplied four times. There are heavy decreases in imports from foreign countries. Foreign consignments of meat to Britain, however, have increased.
