CHINESE BANDITS’ RUSE BULLETS SPATTER SIDES TROOPS’ RECKfoESS FIRE By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7 p.m. London, Jan. 16. Posing as revenue officers searching for opium, a boat load of bandits boarded the British river boat Tuckwo, which was conveying six British Embassy members, including the legation secretary, between Nanking and Chinkiang yesterday. They disclosed their identity after reaching, the deck. The bandits wounded several Chinese, who, resisted, threw one overboard alive and seized a small quantity of opium. Government troops on shore, apparently .suspecting piracy, fired recklessly on the Tuekwo, hundreds of bullets spattering the vessel’s sides. The fire was intensified upon the pirates’ departure in a launch carrying the stolen opium. The steamer reached Shanghai safely.
