SEA LIONS IN CAPTIVITY
DROWNING AT WELLINGTON ZOO, By Telegraph—Press Asioditloa. Wellington, Jan. 17. In reference to the young sea - lion at Auckland, it appears that this is not the first born in captivity in New Zealand. Three have been born at the Wellington zoo, in 1912, 1914 and 1917. Strange to say, the young sea lions have to be taught by their mothers to swim. Two of the Wellington cubs were drowned. After the first drowning a man was told off to watch the second until it had learned to swim, but during half an hour’s absence for some reason the tragedy occurred. The third was lost through the deata of its mother, the mother being, as a matter of fact, killed by her mate when enraged at her entering the water when another male was swimming there.
