WELLINGTON CUP DAY

B!G FIELDS AT TRENTHAM HOLIDAY RACING GIVES A GUIDE. * _ CUP FIELD LOOKS EXTREMELY OPEN CONCENTRATE AND GLARE FANCIED (By “Moturoa.”) . Flagg will be flying at Trentham today, and the wonderful stretch of turf will be the venue of keen sportsmen from both ends of the Dominion. The three-day gathering opens with tho TRENTHAM HIGHWEIGHT. Of ’ 260 sovs. One mile.

King's Jest in form would, appeal to a wide circle, but his form has not been up to the mark and he will need to improve to run prominently. Master Clarence has run good races, and Mister Gamp’s forte is this class of race. However, the latter has not sported silk since. the national meeting and he may need a race. Fine Acre is small , but he is at the top of his form and is in winning vein. Pale Star runs on well, and so does Masher. Those who saw Prince of Orange race at Ellerslie were impressed, and a repetition of that form would find him well up. Llyn Dhu’ will not lack admirers and there will be a following for Semper Paratus, but the majority will probably favour Prince of Orange and Fine Acre. WELLINGTON STAKES. Of 1000 sovs. Five furlongs. Awaken Chrysology Glenartney Autopay Tripping Sargon Teibterden Isa Aspiring Valpre Star of Gold Auda Equltant Princess Betty Orapal Sale Star Prailse Arisus Capehorn— Zeuxis Gold Bound Sir Limond Ex Dono ' Lady Pam Cylinder Dunraven Solferino—Marsa f. In the past the Wellington Stakes has not been an easy race for the public to sort out, and some warm favourites have been rudely upset. Awaken has won three races and run a second in as many starts and seems to be a good one. Tenterden is bred the right way and will improve with racing, and so will Praise. Sir Limond and Lady Pant will be bracketed. Dunraven (Limerick’s brother) created a good impression at Ellerslie. Chrysology is smart and is good over a short course, while Princess Billy had a meritorious win over Paganelli and company at Awapuni. Cylinder is a good sort and is likely to go further in the game. Of the older brigade Aspiring has the best credentials, but the open six will most likely find her engaged. In an even betting race Princess Betty, Praise and Awaken promise to be the elect of the public. The “kids” will have their say in the APPRENTICES’ PLATE. Of 260 sovs. Seven furlongs. Air Laddie Imateaglri Auctioneer, Llmosin Assemble ' • My Own Blue Metal Pedestal Banbrlcigo Portray Dolomite Rational 11 Disorder Swhftray Dutch Money The Bailiff Gipsy Fate Emotion Head Serang With Air Laddie, Blue Metal, Dolomite, Disorder, Dutch Money, Head Serang, Imateagirl and Rational 11. engaged the public will have a wide scope for speculation. Rational 11., Dolomite and Dutch Money should run good races. FITZHERBERT HANDICAP, Of 3’50 sovs. Five furlongs.

Arajean does not appeal as much class, but ho has had a fair amount of racing and for that reason does not appear to be overweighted. Nimble is improving and Sporting Chance should do better. Appeal showed pace in the spring and Valrewa and Zephyrus have shown speed on the track. Probably Nimble, Arajean and Sporting Chance will claim support. WELLINGTON CUP. Of 1500 sovs. One mile and a-half.

This race sets the punters the hardest problem of the day. ‘ Star Stranger ran a great race in the Auckland Cup and the public will recall his victories at Trentham. Among the many races the topweight has taken at Trentham the Gold Cup and the Wellington Cup stand out as his best, and he also ran a good third in the latter race. Concentrate won well at Auckland and then chased the champion of the northern province home in a woight-for-age race. Silver Paper will never find the distance. In the Shade has lost form again. Vertigern won last year, but there was no sting in his Auckland efforts and he will need to vastly improve. The Taranaki mare Bright Glow has yet to find the distance, and so has Panther. Hoylake if in the galloping mood would take a power of beating, but he is a bad horse to follow.

From obscurity a month ago Glare has risen to the heights, and the Australian Sun gelding is spoken of as a possibility for any class of race. He stays on well and, like most true stayers, he is a sluggish mover. Singleton will have some friends, and those looking for an outsider may select Stanchion, who stays on with the best. It should be a wonderful betting race, and the section of tie public which studies form looks likely to make Concentrate, Glare and Star Stranger the favourites.

Mile races are not easy to win at Trentham and they generally give the best horses a chance to show their prowess. Goshawk ran well at Ellerslie, out he is a big striding horse and this course would suit him better. Teri is a good sort, and is rapidly coming back to his Australian form. High Falutin’ is a good sort and won last time up. Night Lad performs solidly. Of the others, Clarendon will be supported, but the actual-favourites appear likely to be Goshawk, High Falutin' and Teri.

The sprint races at Trentham are true tests of speed and the races are not won at the barrier-rise or the bend. True the false rail trips the unwary, blit the straight six gives every horse an even start. Cimabue never runs a bad race on this course, but he has his full measure of weight. Silvermine is honest, but he cannot handle the poundage as well as some and" he will be passed over to Meadow Lark, who has won on this course and scored a double during the holidays. Hunting Cry ran well every start at Auckland, and this ungainly chap is now at the peak of his form. Mcrvette may not be quite brilliant enough, but Great Star and Arrow Lad can go with the best. Goblin Market is brilliant and the best has not been seen of the. Mason protege. Knightlike is fast and has now struck form, but Aspiring looks likely to hold him safe. Aspiring is brilliant over five furlongs and she will take a lot of catching. Four wins in succession are credited to Just So and she should win in better company, but she would need to improve further to win here. Aston is a speed fiend over five furlongs, but the long straight will probably beat him. Aspiring, Cimabue and Meadow Lark will be well supported.

Statuary, Zarene/and Blue Paper are all smart, but the latter should prove the pick of the trio. Habit has struck form and appears, to bo easily the best of the Thespian stock—but her consistency and pace come from . her dain. Equitant can move and Grecian is not a bad sort. Straightcourse and Money Mint might ba the best of the others. The totalisator will probably show Habit, Blue Paper and Grecian as favourites. TRENTHAM TRACKS BETTER. GOOD WORK BY SPRINTERS. Wellington, Jan. 17. The sun and wind of yesterday transformed the track, and the going was fair again at Trentham this morning. The weather was dull and threatening, but fine. The trial grass, tan and outside of the course proper was available, but only pace work was done on the tan. On the trial grass Disorder and Full Feather ran a solid six furlongs. Semper Paratus and Waterline did five furlongs in Imin 7sec, the last four in 52sec, and the straight course five in Imin s|sec. Concentrate and Oral did an easy seven furlongs in Imin 42isec. Chopin stayed with Silvermine over five furlongs in Imin ssec. Teri went well with Pedestal over four furlongs in 52sec. Rory Mor and Glenartney strode out well. Dutch Money beat High Falutin easily over five furlongs in Imin 7sec. Equitant dashed over four furlongs in 49sec, a first-class effort. Bright Glow, going easily all the way, 13sec to the furlong, ran six furlongs in Imin ISsec. Ruanui galloped six furlongs in Imin 23sec, and could have done better. Talisker when doing easy work, faltered just after passing the post. He was amiss in the hind leg, but no definite diagnosis was available. Vivo, accompanied by Banbridge over the last three, ran six furlongs in Imin 2Osec. Havaspot, a good-looking maiden, ran four furlongs easily in 55sec. The Bailiff ran half a mile easily in 52sec. Dainty Ways and The Dove took 53sec for four furlongs on the course .proper. Shrewd and White Fang ran a mile in Imin 50see, the last seven furlongs taking Imin 35 l-ssec. Cuticle and Serang went together over six furlongs in, Imin 20sec. Both were going well. Star Stranger finished better than Vertigern at the end of six furlongs in Imin ISsec, the last four in 51Jsec. Richfield and Just So ran four furlongs in 48Jsec, a first-class effort. t Hard Words, Green Linnet and Autopay broke away raggedly from the half'rnile on the straight. Hard Words came home from the jump off in 4GAsec. It was an excellent gallop on the part of Hard Words. In the Shade and Ti Tree from a standing start ran seven furlongs in Imin 36|sec, the last four in 58sec. Isa and Double Red sprinted from the five furlongs post in Imin 4sec, going easily. Goshawk, and Hunting Cry ran five furlongs in Imin GJsec, the last four in 53sec, but they could have improved vastly. PROSPECTS FOR' TO-DAY’S RACING. (By “Moturoa.”) Nassock ran a good race at Ellerslie and will probably be favourite in the Hokianga Handicap. ' * # * * . The Kaikohe Handicap will find Macroom and Partial Eclipse in .demand. * * * * If Hakanoa were started in the Kawakawa Cup the public would probably make him favourite. In his absence Glena Bay would be well supported. « *■ # «= Exalted and Fiery Lad will not be neglected in the Counties Handicap. * * *- * If he were started in the open six the public would make Hakanoa favourite, but with him out of the way Macroom and Ned Kelly would probably dispute favouritism. #.* # # Partial Eclipse will appeal to many in the Maromaku Handicap. Alloy also will be supported. # # # # Hakanoa and Owairaka look likely to interest the public in the Russell Handicap. PAHIATUA SUMMER MEETING. HANDICAPS ANNOUNCED. Br Telegraph.— Press Aazoclatton.
