BILLY BOYS’ WORKSHOP

HOW TO MAKE A KNIFE BOX. (By the Hut Carpenter). A knife-box is a nice useful tiling to make for mother, and this is not only a good design, but quite easy to make. You will want several pieces of wood th rec-eighths of an inch thick; also a piece of three-ply wood thirteen inches long by nine inches ■ wide, for the bottom' of the box. The sides, 'marked A, must both be carefully sawn to a length of twelve inches and the ends B and B. to a length of eight and three-quarter inches. After planing these pieces all- over, take one of the B lengths, and with a pencil, using your try-square as a guide, mark across the middle on one side two lines three-eighths of an inch apart, as shown in the diagram. Now with your tenon saw cut through these lines to a depth of one-eighth of an inch, and then with a small wood chisel carefully chip away the wood between the saw cuts to form a slot. Treat the other part B in the same way. For the centre part. C you will require a piece of wood twelve and three-quar-ter inches long by three and a-quarter inches wide. To form the slot for the handle make two holes with ft threequarter inch centre-bit and cut away the wood between them. Make the slot nice and smooth with glass paper. The two top corners can now be cut away with the tenon saw. Before fixing the parts together, give them a good rubbing all over with a glass-paper block. This is simply « small block of wood, a little larger than a niatch-box, with a strip of glasspaper partly wrapped.round it. When using the block, grasp it firmly between thumb and fingers to prevent the paper from slipping. •The parts are now ready for screwin'’’ together, and tor thi.s purpose use

three-quarter inch brass screws with countersunk heads. The ends of each piece B are fixed to the side pieces A with two screws, and the bottom Is then fixed iu position with three screws underneath each edge, driven into the sides and ends of the box. The centre part C. when pressed into the slots, is fixed by two screws in each -end., and three- screws from underneath the basehoard. To give it finish to the box. ent a piece of green baize to fit the bottom of each compartment, and lightly glim tiiis in position for Lise knive-, and f-ok.s to rest on,
