MATERNAL MORTALITY

RESEARCH ABROAD. “Great, progress is being made with tho study and treatment of maternal mortality in England and America,” said Professor R. Marshall Allan, of Melbourne University, who arrived in Wellington •this week by tho Makura from San Francisco. Nevertheless, he continued, both countries were keeping a close eye on and following Australia and New Zealand. England, in particular, was making big strides. America was a little behind, being at a big disadvantage with her coloured and mixed population. President Hoover, however, had now become interested, and from a committee recently set up great things were expected. Questioned as regards France, a country with a declining population, Professor Allan said that tho progress was by no means as marked as in tho AngloSaxon countries. Germany was another European nation well behind England and America.
