ISSUES IK NEW PLYMOUTH. A return of books issued by the New Plymouth library during the year 1_929 shows a grand total issue of 121,548. The largest issue for any one month was 11,357 hi August, and the lowest issue, 8268, was in February. A gratifying feature in this year’s issue is the large increase in the general literature section as shown in the issues under the following classification (1928 figures in brackets). —General 34 (57), philosophy 238 (184;, religion 252 (234), sociology* 629 (354), philology 10 (9), natural science 236 (211), useful arts 542 (259), fine arts 483 (505), literature 1270 (1228), history 1632 (1348), travel 31 : (2265), biography 2523 (1869), fiction 92,056 ( 88,604), children 11,300 (12,087), periodicals 7210 (6690), total 121,548 (115,904). The increase in fiction, children’s books and periodicals was 385. ’ The increase in the general literature section was 24-59.
