WINKS ROAD RE-SURFACED.

The monthly meeting of the Waimate West County Council was hdld yesterday, there being present Messrs. E. Long (chairman), F. Mourie, J. S. McKay, S. H. 1c Fleming, J. Leslie and T. A. Bridge. The engineer, Air. J. A. Hansen, reported that SO chains of Lower Winks Road had been refaeed with crushed metai and grouted with bitumen. •‘The crusher is now being set up on Alanaia Road ready to make a start widening this road. Maintenance work has been carried out on Skeet, Alain South, Winks and other roads. The balance of the bitumen supplies have arrived. The new tar sprayer has not yet come to hand.” * An authority for £64 2s Id was received from the Public Works Department for expenditure on Harvey’s bridge, which work has been completed. The rough state of Kearns and Upper Winks Road was referred to by Cr. McKay and it was decided to empower the engineer to attend to this work. The council discussed the matter of unpaid rates and decided that a penalty of 10 per cent, should be added to all outstanding amounts after a certain date. One case of scarlet fever was notified. The Commissioner of Crown Lands advised that reservations of an area of six acres as a site for. the use of the Department of Agriculture had been cancelled and that the land would be available for disposal in terms of the Land Act. In all probability the area would be offered for sale by public auction. The. chairman explained that the land was now being used by the council as a horse paddock. It was decided to fix Wednesday as the half-holiday within the county for the coming year. ‘■The fixing of the half’holiday by us is a farce,” declared CT. Brdige. “We fix Wednesday so as to fall into line with Alanaia, and the Kaupokcnui stores apply to the department for exemption and close on Saturday.”

NEW CATHOLIC SCHOOL.

BUILDING AT MANAIA. The erection of a new Roman Catholic school at Alanaia was commenced recently. The preliminary work consisted of the removal of the old school and the Hibernian Hall, which had been used as an additional classroom. The latter is one of the oldest wooden buildings in Alanaia. The old buildings, which have been reerected adjoining the Catholic church, will later be used as a social ball and supper room. The preparation of the foundations for the new structure is now proceeding. The building, which is to be of concrete, will contain three classrooms, each 27ft. x 24ft. Running the full length of the building there will h. an access corridor eight feet wide, and the entrance porch will be 10ft. 6in., with a cloakroom Bft. by 7ft. Gin. adjacent. Provision is being made for a fireplace in one corner of each classroom. The building will run east and west, thus allowing plenty of sunlight in each room, the entrance and corridor being on the south side. Air. Arthur Brown, of Hawera, is the building contractor, and Messrs. JDuflill and Gibson, Hawera, are the architects. DANCE AT OHANGAI HALL. The novelty dance held at the Ohangai Hall on Tuesday evening proved an attraction for large numbers of dancers. Visitors came from practically all over South Taranaki, and as a result ,the liall funds benefited considerably. The function was arranged by a committee of which Misses R. Presland and G. Savage were joint secretaries. Airs. Bennett and Mr. N. Wills provided the music and Air. E, Radford was master of ceremonies. Alonte Carlo dances were won by Aliss G. Savage and Mr. L. AlacDonald and Miss F. Taylor and Mr. W. E. Parrott. MANAIA ITEMS. Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Bennett have returned from a visit to Dannevirke. Mrs. H. Mead and Aliss Alcad visited Palmerston North during the holidays. Mr. Jordan, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Alanaia, is spending his vacation in the north.

Air. Hunter, of Palmerston North, and formerly of the Bank of Australasia staff at Manaia and Hawera, has been spending a holiday in Taranaki. Mr. and Mrs. N. C. Innes spent a few days’ holiday at New Plymouth. Air. J. A. Hansen has returned from the South Island, where he attended the annual meeting of the New Zealand Athletic and CyQle Union,
