FLINDERS ISLAND SHAKEN
'EARTHQUAKE UNDER THE SEA.
STRANGE EXPERIENCE OF SHIPS.
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.
Melbourne, Dec. 31. A severe earthquake occurred at Flinders Island at 10.45 on Sunday morning. It la'sted three minutes. It came from the north-east and shook the houses, breaking windows and cracking walls and chimneys. The alarmed inhabitants rushed into the streets. The steamer Calli'bou, which was at the wharf, shook as if her engines were racing. Judging from the experience of the Union Company’s steamer Kiwitea, the earthquake had its centre at sea. The captain stated that all on board felt a submarine disturbance. The vessel was about 30 miles south-east of Cape Bairen. The ship trembled and vibrated from stem to stern for 30 seconds. It then appeared to lift bodily in the water.
