Delivering his New ear address at Canterbury Cathedral the Archbishop of Canterbury said the experience of the past year showed that Britain’s century-long leadership in commerce and industry was seriously threatened Competitor had arisen to supplant the British in the markets. The British had thought their position was assured. More than 1,000,000 were unemployed and the future was clouded with uncertainty. Wise political and economic measures might provide partial remedies for the nation’s sickness, but a cure could come only through restoring and re-in. igorating the strength of the whole body. The people were tending to rely too much on State aid instead of fulfilling their personal responsibilities.
