GOOD PRIZES FOR BIG FIELDS. ATTRACTIVE CUP FEATURE. (By “Moturoa."’) One of the most progressive clubs on the southern East Coast is the Wairarapa body who come forth this season with a £7OO cup race, while other events range from £l5O to £3OO apiece. Such an attractive programme is sure to draw good horses and as the result of this progressive policy, the club look like having a record gathering. ELECTRIC HANDICAP. Five furlongs.

Kaihoro seems to have lost all form, but Banket is smart over this distance and Royal Duke is . also speedy. Silver Coot showed a clean pair of heels to the sprint field-at Palmerston North only to be, beaten right on the post and the race would not do him any harm. Veronese is another who can, scamper and Callanmore has been racing prominently lately. In a good betting race, the public may decide in favour of Silver Coot and Callanmore or in the absence of the latter Banket would advance in favour.

There was a lot of merit in the win scored by High Society at Awapuni and the Lord Quex gelding- looks to be too good for Grecian and Oscar. ..

Lady Pam was too good for Princess Petty on the opening day at the Manawatu meeting and as the latter beat Paganelli the following day, that form makes Ladv Pam to be above the average. She promises to see a “Gloaming” priee to-morrow.

Rabbi ran below form in the Manawatu Cup, but as he had done-very little work since Feilding, some excuse must be made for his failure. With only two more pounds here, he must be given a chance to make amends. Arrow Lad is staying on better than earlier in his career, but this distance might be just too far for him. Teri and Puithair nave been disappointments,' and Talisker has been far from consistent. Stanchion, under a light weight, should not have much difficulty in finding the distance while Courageous, Atholspear, Admiral Drake and Joy Bird all stay on, though Courageous and Atholspear would be the choice of that quintette. In what promises to be a good betting race, Rabbi might find slightly more support than Atholspear and Courageous.

CHAMPION HACK HANDICAP. One Mile.

_ Were the -Corry Bracket, MakeUp and Imateagirl started in this race, the public would be inclined to overlook their recent failures, and they would probably start warm favourites. Clarendon stays on well, but six furlongs should suit Fernden better. Sylvan Dell is fast, and Shortly ran’ good races at the New Zealand Cup meeting pver 7 furlongs and a mile, and may be improved with her spell, while Gold Bag, Chopin, Qscar, Kirrana and Boundelay are all good class hacks. Probably, in the absence of Fernden and Oscar, the bracket will be better supported than Clarendon.

WARDELL HANDICAP. Seven furlongs.

Arikinui won attractively at last time of asking, and is a galloper of no mean ability. Maui races consistently, though ehe is not up to very high class. Then Miss Ransom is fast, and Rory Mor raced prominently at Awapuni. Callanmore ie one who has surprised before by winning such a race, but form points to Arikinui and Rory. Mor being the most likely favourites.

WHAREKAKA HANDICAP. Six furlongs.

Fernden has proved himself a .great walloper this season, and the manner in which he disposed of 'the open class sprinters at Awapuni on Saturday ensures him heavy support to-day. Noteworthy ran a good race on Boxing Day, and Ben Hur and Rational 11. also went solid races at the Manawatu meeting. However, Fernden looks like dominating the betting market, but in his absence Noteworthy would probably claim most support. The first day’s programme concludes with the—
