STORMY HOLIDAY WEATHER
WIND AND RAIN IN WELLINGTON.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Dee. 30.
Though by all reports it was? better oft' than most places witli'regard to holiday weather, ? Wellington was treated badly yesterday, wind and rain from the north keeping most folk indoors. Minor damage was caused by the wind, particularly to gardens. The lifesaving display at Island Bay was postponed until New Year's Day. The 6.10 p.m. train from Masterton, consisting of six carriages and two engines, could not get up the Rimutakas, owing to tho weather and slippery rails, It was split, and two carriages were taken up first and the rest afterwards. Meanwhile, for an hour and a-half, the train from Wellington was held up at the summit. It was an unenviable experience for all concerned in this exposed locality. - The wind contained frequent gusts of over 60 miles an hour. At 2.40 p.m. a gust of 72 miles an hour was recorded. This is a record for Wellington. '
