WEDDING AT HAWERA

UN DERHILL—S YME. Unusual interest was manifested in the wedding at Hawera on Boxing Day of Phyllis, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Waller Syme, Hawera, to Hubert Thomas, third son of Mr. and Mrs. Underhill, Wellington. St. John’s Presbyterian Church was attractively decorated by Mrs. Swinburne, the bridesmaids and friends of the bride with a profusion of red rambler roses, ferns and hydrangeas, interspersed with white silk ribbon. Tho ceremony was performed by the Rev. R. E. Evans before a large number of guests, many of whom had travelled from all parts of New Zealand. Mr. L. J. Rowe officiated at the organ. Escorted by her father, the bride looked charming in afrock of white silk lace and georgette over georgette, with a beautiful embroidered veil and silk mop cap. She carried a snow-white bouquet. In attendance as bridesmaids were Miss Ethel Christie (Manaia), chief bridesmaid, Miss Muriel Strange (Hawera), Miss Ellaljne Bell (Wellington) and Miss Aileen Cameron (Okaiawa). They were frocked alike in maize georgette over figured satin underskirts, green felt hats and green satin shoes to match. Each carried a bouquet to tone. Little Mary Syme, a sister of the bride, who acted as flower girl, was dressed in early Victorian style with a green poke bonnet and floral yellow satin. With her, as

page boy, was Gerald Swinburne, who wore bright green silk. Mr. Arthur Harrop acted as best man and Messrs. Charles S. Robb, Raymond and Donald Syme as groomsmen. Following the ceremony a gracious and typically thoughtful action was performed by the bride as her car passed the cenotaph, she stopped it and deposited her beautiful bouquet at the foot of the memorial.

The reception was held at the Foresters’ Hall, prettily decorated for the occasion with punga ferns intertwined with rambler roses and a scheme of primrose and green streamers. The decorations were supervised by Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Stevens. The guests, numbering 130, were received by Mrs. W. Syme, who was dressed in a hand-paint-ed floral silk georgette frock with godets of black lace and hat of black crinoline to match. Prior to the wedding breakfast the bride cut a three-tier wedding cake, the gift of Mrs. D. Cameron (Okaiawa) and handed, with a goblet of wine, a piece to each guest.

When the bride returned to wish her friends good-bye she was dressed in a navy blue silk marocain coat, with mole fur collar, worn over a floral silk georgette frock and a navy hat to match. The bride’s present to the bridegroom was a set of initialled military brushes and a safety razor set. The bridegroom presented the bride with a beautiful stole fur and the bridesmaids with gold neck.aces.

After Mr. and Mrs. Underhill had left on their honeymoon the hall was cleared for dancing to music supplied by Coburn’s orchestra, and the guests had a gay time until late in the evening. The residence of Mr. and Mrs. Underhill will be at Wellington.
