NEPHEW OF SITTING BULL
VISIT OF INDIAN CHIEFTAIN
SEEKS SCALPS ON BOWLING GREEN
HEAD OF MOHAWKS IN DOMINION.
(By Wire—Special to News). Auckland, Last Night.
A nephew of a picturesque American chieftain, Sitting Bull, who played, a consequential part in the history of North America, Jack Flashiff arrived by the Aorangi from Vancouver yesterday afternoon to play bowls. Known as “His Royal Highness” and “Prince,” Flashiff is as little like the popular conception of a member of his race as can be imagined. Small of stature, he wears hornrimmed spectacles, is taciturn and declares himself to be no seeker of advertisement. He is at the present day chieftain of the Mohawk Indians, who live on reservations near Paris, Ontario, and he is a member of the local bowling club. He is married and has eight children. ' ’. . One characteristic of his race is employed by Flashiff in the mild sport of bowling. Fellow players vow that he has an eye like a hawk when he trundles the bowl near kitty. On board 1 the Aorangi he showed agility in..winning tho bullboard tournament. “His Highness” is one of the- most popular members of the Canadian bowlin«- party, who commence their .tour of New Zealand at Whangarei on Tuesday, when they meet local finks. This is his first time on the “war path,” and h® is only looking for bowlers scalps', in. friendly contests. He has never been absent from home before, 1 ; but. thoqgn he is now 7900 miles away his voice is still heard by his people. Prior to Jils departure for tho Domi non he had a message recorded for gramophone jreproduction on Christmas Day, a gracious thought w'hich is said to be typical of his nature.
The Mohawk Indian settlement near Paris is one of tho largest in Canada, but it is not studded with tepees as New Zealanders might'imagine. Many of the tribe have fine homes and their own motor-cars. They are sociable people and' have adopted European habits and modes of living. Few of the ancient customs have been preserved. 'J
