Auckland, Last Night. The Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting was continued at Ellerslie today in fine weather and tho conditions were considerably better generally than those experienced on Boxing Day. The 1,- Jesuits were hot in favour of backers, Duellona being the only actual favourite to score, while Imperial Prince, Royal Doulton and Tcntcrden were all •t good prices. The racing was again

very keen and nearly all the finishes were very close, the only easy win being that of King's Guard, who romped home in the Ponsonby Hurdles. One of the features of the racing was the successful riding of 11. Gray, who rode three winners and a second in .five mounts. The inquiry into the running of Pegaway in the Christmas Handicap on the first day was held after the first race to-day. The judicial committee after hearing the evidence decider! that no action was necessary. GALLANT VICTORY BY A HEAD... Twelve started in the Fergtisson Han-, dicap, and Richfield was an odds-on favourite, nearly twice as well backed as Greenaway, with Imperial Prince a moderately fancied fifth choice at a> false price, which nearly reached double figures. Relation lost several lengths at the start, but ran through quickly on the inside to take up the running in a furlong from Thku, Greenaway and Luminary. Nearing the turn Tuku assumed command and was first into the. straight from Richfield, delation, Luminary, Greenaway, Llyn Dim and Imperial Prince. Once they straightened up Richfield headed the leader and look ed like winning comfortably until Imperial Prince appeared on the inside less than a furlong from the post. Imperial Prince finished stoutly under pressure and got up to win by a head from Richfield, who veered outwards under the whip in the last fifty yards. Greenaway was two lengths away third and Luminary fourth, next coming Tuku, Liya Dhu and Always. Richfield might have won if he had kept absolutely straight. Greenaway and Tuku again ran solid races and may yet get a turn at the meeting. EASY FOR HUNTING CRY. The scratching of Eaglet left only three runners in the King's Plate and Hunting Cry was a slightly better than even money favourite.- Toxeuma was first-to break the line from a good start, and when they were properly on the journey he was out two lengths from Historic, on the rails, and Hunting Cry. Four .furlongs from home Historic was being kicked up to hold his position, and at the three furlongs Hunting Cry began to close slightly on Toxeuma, who was still over a length in ft" ■ i '-•’tenng the straight. Hunting Cry caught Toxeuma at the distance and eame on to win nicely by a neck from Toxeuma, with Historic five lengths way third Hunting Cry would probably have won a little easier only for his ri..cr being content to keep him going with hi* hands and heels. H. Gray, who rode Hunting Cry, was before the stewards in connection with the Pegaway inquiry until a few minutes before starting time, and he was accorded a reception when he came out to mount. /The applause was renev .1 when he returucu to the enclosure, and there is no doubt that he is an idol with many of the racing public.

‘ KING’S GUARD ROMPS HOME. A good pool on the Ponsonby Hurdles saw Pangolin, King’s Guard and Inii porter at the head of the quotation's. Prince Lu and Catonian went out . very 1 fast and they had the field strung out over 50 yards before crossing the second I hurdle. Catonian came down at the ’ began to move up and took up fourth , position at the seven furlongs post. Four furlongs from home King’s Guard ran up to Prince Lu, and at this stage Pangolin and Importer were the only others close enough to have a chance. King’s Guard began to draw away at the home turn and was never - afterwards troubled to win very easily by seven lengths from Prince Lu, who defeated Importer b by nine lengths. Pangolin was a mod- ’ crate fourth, with the others badly beaten. King’s Guard was an improved 1 horse for Iris race on the first day and won with ridiculous case. Prince Lu I again showed a lot of dash and Import- . er plodded solidly all the way. Pangolin made an improved showing, although he gave no trouble over the last few furlongs. Catonian broke his off hind leg when he fell and was destroyed. OUTSIDER STAYS ON SOLIDLY. The Summer Cup was d great betting race, with Seatown, Star Stranger and Pegaway heavily backed and Royal > Doulton at a double figure price. Pan- : ther and Merry Mint carried the field along with Amor, Lucy Rose and Royal Doulton well placed. Merry Mint was first*into the straight from Luey .Rose, Royal Doulton, Amor and Panther. with the others bunching and Pegaway coming fast on the outside. The field spread across the course at the distance and in a great finish Royal Doulton prevailed •by a neck from Pegaway, who beat Amor by three-quarters of a length. Star Stranger was right up fourth, followed by Lucy Rose, Vertigern, Merry Mint and The Hawk. Pegaway was last until five furlongs from home, when he commenced a w -nderful run on the outside and went practically round the field. Royal Do'f.ton was always well placed and stayed on very

v * — J . soholy when the pressure was applied. I Star Stranger was in trouble near the live furlong post, where ho vas cut back from a good position. II j was going great guns at the end. Merry Mint. Lucy Rose, Vertigern and Pantiie’r were all in at the distance post, and Amor ran another of his solid races Jaieux fell at the half mile post. TENTERDEN ALL THE WAY.Another good dividend was produced in the Criterion Handicap, in which the moderately fancied. Tenterden won narrowly from the hot favourite Awaken, who was over* twice as well backed as the second fancy, Biddy's Boy. Tenter- : den was quickly in front and led into the straight with Open Cheque and Betterment in close attendance and then Hard Words, Awaken, Biddy s Boy and Oil King. Tenterden he'd his own in the run to the judge and won ay half a length from Awaken, who J Heated Tremetus by a similar margin. Nimble was fourth, followed by Oil King and Betterment. Tenterden showed fine speed and hung on well. Awaken ran a good race and Tremetus finished solidly. Hard Words, Open Cheque and Betterment a'.l showed speed, but could not go oh with it at the finish. THE FAVOURITE AT LAST. Duellona was an odds-on favourite i for the Waitemata Handicap, over twieo as well supported as Prince of Orange, who had a fair call over antique. Seasong, Nassau Lady and Pedestal were prominent early and were the leaders into the straight from Duellona, Prines i of Orange, Thurnus and Antique. Once in lino for homo Duellona ranged up i on the outside of the leaders and camo i l°h ito win by a ncek from Nassau :

Lady, with Antique another neck away third. Prince of Orange, who put up 81b overweight to secure the services of H. Goldfinch, was right up fourth, succeeded by Motere and Thurnus. Duellona was a» class' above the others, although she had little to spare at the finish. Nassau Lady was-always in tin picture, but Antique, who •’ ' i was badly placed early. Motere way trouble, at the half mile post, but was running on at the finish. KNIGHTLIKE’S HEAD IN FRONT. Great Star was a hot favourite for the Electric Handicap, having a very decided call over Cimabue and Knightlike. The inside horses, Great Star, Lady’s Boy, Knightlike and Cimabue re- . ceived several lengths the best of an uneven start, while Tea'Time and Town Bird were badly left. Polyxena and Vallar ran through quickly to be in the lead at the end of two furlongs, and then Awarere went up on the outside. Awarere was first round the bend from Polyxena, Leitrim, Vallar, Cimabue and Knightlike. Leitrim had charge at the distance, but Knightlike finished strongly and beat him by a head. Polyxena was two lengths away third and Cimabue fourth, next to finish being Awa-

rere, Lady’s Boy and Takutama. Great Star dropped out quickly after going three furlongs and finished well back. His form was too bad to be. true. Knightlike- finished well, but was a shade lucky to beat Leitrim, who would have won if he had got away as well as the winner. Polyxena, Vallar and Awarere showed great speed and Awarere would .have been very troublesome if lie had been drawn better at the post. Cimabue ran another good race, - but was steadied by his weight at the finish. HYDE PARK HOLDS HIS . OWN. Heavy wagering on the Plunket Handicap saw Goshawk, Royal Parade and the Ti Tree-Le Choucas bracket best backed. Royal Parade and Goshawk showed out first and then Hyde Park took charge from Eager Rose and King Midasr Hyde Park showed the way into the straight to King Midas, Gemlight, Eager Rose, Royal Parade and Goshawk. Hyde Park held his own in the run home and won a >good race by a neck from Goshawk, who finished well to beat King Emerald by lialf a length. Ti Tree was right up fourth, followed by Eager Rose and Royal Parade. The field carried the tapes of the barrier away and as a result Le Choucas had his chance extinguished. Hyde Park was well ridden by H. Gray and gave that rider his third winning mount for the day. Goshawk, King Emerald and Ti Tree all finished well, Ti Tree coming from a good way back. Royal Parade was right up on the outside at the furlong post, but weakened ■in the last ' half furlong.
