CHRISTMAS EVE FESTIVITIES. The children of Kaponga on Christmas Eve were entertained by the Christmas carnival committee, which comprised practically all the business people of the town. Shortly after 2 p.m. Father Christmas (Mr. A. Melville) arrived by motor lorry to distribute his gifts, and was eagerly surrounded by a crowd of 200 children with a large number of visitors and residents of the town as interested spectators. It took some time to. distribute sealed envelopes containing a silver coin, a balloon and a bag of sweets, and even with 200 of these packages there were not sufficient to -go round. Following the distribution of gifts the children were entertained at a free picture entertainment provided by the carnival committee, and the town hall was filled to capacity. The coloured lighting and decorations of the shops, together with special coloured street lighting, gave a cheerful appearance to the town.
