MAYORAL ELECTIONS
MANY WOMEN SUCCESSFUL. The election of Lord Mayors and Mavors in over 300 cities and boroughs in England and Wales took place on November 9. More women have been chosen this year. . One of them, in London, is Phipps, wife of Sir Edmund Phipps, who has been returned for Chelsea, hoi years Lady. Phipps has been actively associated with Chelsea’s public work, and has been a member of the council since 1914. Besides being chairman oi the Public Health Committe for nine years, she is a member of the Housing Committee. . . , The Countess of Warwick is Warwick’s first woman Mayor. She is the widow of the sixth earl, and sister of ; Captain Robert Anthony Eden, M.P. for Warwick and Leamington. Mansfield chose Mrs- Ethel E. .Wainwright. She, too, is tire borough s first woman mayor. Hereford’s first and only woman of the council, Mrs. Luard bar been honoured with the mayoralty, and other boroughs have re-elected worn-"'. to serve for . another term, including: Tynemouth, Dame Maud Burnett; Thetford, Mrs. L. E.'.Bidwell; Wrexham, Mrs. S. Edward Jones (for the third time);' Sandwich, Mrs. Andrewes Urthwatt; Stratford -on - Avon, Councillor Annie Justins; Welshpool, Mrs. J. H. Djivigs. ■ - x « At Higham Ferrers, Mrs. F. J. Simpson, wife of the town clerk of the borough, who has previously occupied the mayoralty, was again chosen, and Matford selected Mrs. A. F. Broad as the borough’s first woman mayor. The Hon. John Coventry, son of the late Viscount Deerhurst, and brother of the present Lord Deerhurst, was elected Mayor of Worcester. His mother, Virginia Viscountess Deerhurst, will act as Mayoress. Miss Sara Sheerien, the nine-year-old daughter of Councillor Sheerien, the new Mayor of Barnsley, is believed to be the younsest Mayoress iji. the■’» country.
