PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ TENNIS

TOURNAMENT AT HAWERA. Children from the various primary schools in the district assembled at the Hawera tennis courts on Saturday to compete in the primary schools’ tournament. The standard of play showed a vast improvement in the form shown previously, and some very promising players competed. On the whole the children reflected the coaching given by these interested in junior tennis, the most noticeable result being seen in the freedom of style of the majority of the competitors. Results are:— BOYS. First Round. —R. Best lost to M. Dickie 9—5; M. Donnelly beat G. Innes 9—3; C. Nodder beat W. Evans 9—o; B. Hinga lost to B. Edwards 9—o; S. McKay beat Tuka Rangitonga 9—l; B. Third Round. —Dickie beat Nicholas 9—2; Lee beat Watt 9—3.

In the boys’ semi-final match between Donnelly and Dickie the best tennis of the day was seen, both boys playing well above the usual standard of school tennis and adopting court tactics that might have been expected from players of more mature years. Donnelly possesses an excellent forehand, and used it to advantage in keeping his opponent well back. On the occasions on which Dickie came in to the net he was beaten by lobs of an ideal length. Both the finals in the girls’ aand boys’ events will be played during the forthcoming tournament at Hawera. PERSONALS. The death of William O’Dowd took place at Rockhampton, Queensland, on Friday.
