Gilligan sent Nelson in to bat on a good wicket to-day at the commencement of the cricket match between Nelson and tlie English tourists. Earle, Legge and Bowlcy are not playing. The local team made a poor start, losing two wickets for 13. However, Neale and S. Newman became associated m a partnership for the third wicket which realised 65 runs. Newman made some pretty shots off Barrait to the off boundary. He was missed early in his innings in the slips off Nichols, with whom the batsmen were not troubled. Neale batted faultlessly till he was 46, when he was missed twice in the last over before lunch, when two wickets were down for 79. Six bowlers were tried before lunch. On. resuming Duleepsinhji, who was sending down twisty ones, nad Neale caught on the leg side. He batted for DO minutes. In the next over Allom skittled Newman, and four wickets were down for 75. Allom then had three wickets for six runs in eight overs. Eden and- Jenkins came to light with a bright partnership of 58 for the fifth wicket, Duleepsinhji proving expensive. In one over Eden hit two fours, a sixand another four off consecutive baL's from the Indian, and 19 off the over. Eden made 30 in 30 minntes. The century was made in 110 minutes. Frequent bowling changes had no effect until Nichols took his first wicket, Cornford brilliantly catching Jenkins behind the stumps.
