It is a fairly common practice on the part of people in Australia and elsewhere to forward stamps of their own country to New Zealand to cover the cost of replies to their communcations or other minor charges (says the Christchurch Times). Such stamps are quite useless to the recipients in New Zealand. Australian stamps, for example, cannot bo negotiated in New Zealand by exchange for New Zealand stamps or otherwise. So far as is known the same thing applies to New Zealand stamps sent overseas. However, Australian and British stamps can bo purchased in New Zealand, and these would, of course, be usable in tho respective countries. There is, however, a limit placed on tho number sold to any one person, tho maximum purchase being sixpence worth. The reason for this restriction is to discourage th- sending of remittances by stamps. British postal orders r;n be obtained in New Zealand to cover small remittances, but Australian postal orders axe not available, and remittances to Australia must be made by money order.
