MELANESIAN MISSION

Effort to raise xgwo. London, Nov. 7. In the current issue of the Southern Cross Log acknowledgment is made of a legacy of £lOOO from the estate of Miss Olive Way, late of Rose Court, West Malvern. Miss Way had long been a very faithful friend to the mission and for 24 years a supporter of one of the mission scholars. In the August issue of the Log supporters of the mission were told of the serious position of the Melanesian finances and that owing to a deficit of £6OOO it had been found necessary to cut down orders for stores and other necessaries and to reduce the number of scholars at the schools. When this announcement wae made a layman,. ,who desires to be anonymous, communicated with the London headquarters, saying that he was desirous of raising £lOOO toward the £6OOO required. The bishop will reach England in March to attend the Lambeth Conference, and those interested here are hoping to wipe out the debt on the mission. Toward this amount the layman referred to appeals for 50 donations of £2O each or such smaller sums as will make up units of £2O. The authorities realise that what they must do between now and March is to go out into the highways and find new subscribers and so cheer the bishop upon his arrival.
