BRIGHT GLOW’S VICTORY

WINS EGMONT GUP BRILLIANTLY

EASY DEFEAT OF TOP-NOTCH FIELD'

CONCENTRATE’S GLIMPSE OF FORM

The best miler in. the Dominion, Bright Glow, displayed brilliance in downing the top-notch field of a dozen that contested the Egmont Cup and, judiciously handled by A. E. Ellis, did not give her army of supporters a minut.e’s worry. Two defeats at Feilding were recently recorded against Bright Glow, but the public stuck solidly: to the brilliant Hawera mare yesterday, and in a good betting race she was entrusted with nearly £lOO more than Seatown, with a big "following for Concentrate; Merry Mint, First Acre and Paganelli. ' The defection of Rabbi came as a blow to' many, wjiile the other absentees, Silvermiiie and The Hawk, left a dozen to contest the race. Concentrate, scratched along in his preliminary, but Star Stranger, Paganelli, Bright Glow, Seatown and Merry Mint strode out boldly. , ■

When the barrier went up. Star Stranger and Star Area were chopped out and Concentrate.began smartly, to pilot 1 Paganelli and .Merry Mint on to the course proper, but at once there was a juggle for positions and Paganelli pulled to the lead from Merry Mint, Le Choucas, First Acre, Concentrate, •• Bright Glow, Seatown, Spearmiss and Hipo. Going oufc of the straight and passing the six furlong post Paganelli was making play from Merry Mint, with two lengths to Bright Glow, who was moving up, First Acre, Le Choucas, Concentrate, Hipo, Yoma and Seatown, with Star Stranger last. Paganelli threw up the sponge five furlongs from home, and at the half-mile Merry Mint was just clear of Bright Glow, with a bunch that included Concentrate, Le Choucas, Spearmiss and Seatown next. Bright Glow ranged alongside Merry Mint crossing the top and was actually first into the straight from Merry Mint, Concentrate, Seatown, Spearmiss and First Acre. Bright Glow soon shook off Merry Mint and then Concentrate put in a challenge, with Seatown boxed in behind. Bright Glow was the winner from the distance, and though Seatown, Concentrate and Merry Mint all came again, she outclassed them to win by a length from Concentrate, whose head was just in front of Merry Mint, and a neck further back came Seatown; .Spearmiss was a length and a half back fifth and Star Stranger (who put in some great work in the straight), First Acre, Hipo, Paganelli, Yoma, Star. Area and Le Choucas followed. -

Bright Glow was given an ovation on to scale, and she did not appear the least distressed. by her effort. Concentrate hung on very well, but' his race was hardly an Auckland Cup trial, and he will, need to improve a lot before Boxing Day to win. Merry Mint was made °a lot of use of, but went well. BUt for being blocked below the distance t Seatown would have given a lot of trouble, and he ran his best race since returning from Australia. Of the rest, the performance of Star Stranger was the most impressive, and- the bld chap is nearly back to his best form. He and Seatown did easily the best of the' Auckland Cup aspirants.

FAVOURITE’S DOWNFALL.

GOING STOPS THE TOP-WEIGHTS.

The public would have nothing but Horomea and- Brigadier Bill in the Ohawe Hurdles, but the followers of the top-weightk never looked like running into the money. Horomea went down scratchily in her preliminary and ran just as her condition suggested, tailing the field from start to finish. ■

Schorr began best, but Bonhomme and Joke Form headed him at the first fence and they piloted Royal Acre and Schorr into the straight. Joke Form took up the running in the straight and was clear of Royal Acre at the jump in front of the stands, Bonhomme, Diana’s Lad, Brigadier Bill,_Vivo and Schorr following, with Horomea tailed off. As they turned into the back stretch Dulieu shook the stick at Royal Acre, who soon displaced Joke Form and was two lengths clear of Bonhomme, Joke Form, Diana’s Lad, Vivo and Brigadier Bill in a bunch. Across the top Bonhomme shot out after Royal Acre, but he struck the fence three furlongs from home, leaving Royal Acre to run into the straight four lengths ahead of Bonhomme and Vivo, with Diana’s Lad and Joke Form handy arid Atareria coming fast from an impossible position. In the ■run home nothing looked like catching Royal Acre, who passed the post three lengths to the good of Vivo, who finished on to cut Bonhomme out of second money by a length. Atareria was a good fourth, and strung out were Diana’s Lad, Joke Form, Brigadier Bill and Novar. -—

Royal Acre scored decisively arid ran miles above his Waverley form. Though not up to good class, he can hold his own with the hurdlers of this neighbourhood. Vivo ran fairly, but Bonhomme would have been very hard to shake off but for getting into the penultimate obstacle. He was very lame on returning to the birdcage. Atareria would no°t gallop an inch in the early stages of the race, but was going great guns at the Will he take it into his head to-day? Brigadier"Bill and Horomea ran disgraceful races, though the mare was too sore to give of her best.

ORAZONE STRIKES FORM. FAVOURITES AGAIN MISSING. Mithra was backed down to a short price for the Whareroa Handicap, and outside of Manly nothing was given a chance. It was a sore blow for the public, as their choices chased the field past the winning' qosL

Manly moved away smartly (...from Mithra, Orazone, Macroom and Rory Mor, and the order suffered no change across the top. .Along the back stretch Manly appeared to be bowling along freely with Mithra at his side and'a couple of lengths to Macroom, Rory, Mor and Flying Shot, the latter having moved up fast to displace Orazone. Manly and Mithra were first to hit the home turn, but as they swung into the straight Flying Shot and Rory Mor had joined the issue, the quartette being abreast ahead of Orazone, who waa plugging along comfortably. Mithra.

began to drift below the distance, where • the stick was ion Manly and Flying Shot. At the distance Rory Mor had shaken off the trio, but he had not reckoned with Orazone, who came fast to win by a length from Rory Mor, while Wenday also came into the picture at the finish to worry Flying Shot out of the minor placing a similar distance back.' Macroom and Mint Leaf were next, with Manly whipping in the field. , It was a shocking field for a £2OO race, and Orazone and Rory Mor stood out a long way above the others. Orftzone is the most likely one to be im- • proved by the race. FERNDEN IS A GOOD ONE. NEW PLYMOUTH MARE SURPRISES ' In winning the Tokaora Handicap from the New Plymouth mare Peg Black, who had 20 pounds the better of the deal, Fernden put up a good performance, for after meeting with trouble at the entrance to the straight he wore down the leader, Callapat, and stalled off a strong challenge from Peg Black and Statuary. The ex-Aucklander is one to watch during the holiday meetings. From a straggling start Akatea was temporarily in front, but when the field settled down Callapat had taken up the running from Akatea, Fernden, Just So and, Peg Black. Arakuku made up a lot of ground down the back and on, the bend Callapat was clear of Fernden, Arakuku, Just So, Statuary, St. Melba, and Peg Black. The order did not suffer much change across the top and Callapat looked the best of good things when he turned for home. Callapat had a break on Fernden at the distance, with Statuary and Peg Black coming fast on the outside, but with half a furlong to go the leader collapsed like a pricked balloon, and with fifty yards to go Fernden, Statuary and Peg Black were engaged in a thrilling duel. It looked as if Me- • : Cormac let up on Fernden over the lost bit, but he quickly responded to the whip and held off Peg Black by a neck, with Statuary a head further back, i There was daylight to Callapat, with 1 Just So, St. Melba, Romari Pearl and Tentcall next. Peg Black drew the rails, but did not begin smartly enough to benefit by the ,¥ position and was squeezed baCk at the half-mile. She finished resolutely and - : may not long be a maiden. Statuary finished strongly, but Callapat put up a very weak fight when tackled. Just . ’ So was always in trouble and Reed, did not knock her about. She may make a big. improvement to-day.

Racecourse beer is stunning. » ■» a « These razor gangs seem to have their knives into everybody./ # * * * . Rabbi was scratched for. the Cup lat 11 a.m, and The Hawk at 12.45 p.m. yesterday. Silvermine was scratched at ■_ 7.10 a.m. on Monday. For the Rlying!;':, Handicap Oration was scratched at 2.15 p.m.
