Mr. A. J. Papps, who has recently been operated upon for appendicitis, is now making a good recovery at a private hospital. - ’.

The resignation of Dr. L. Kandellas senior house surgeon at the NewPlymouth Hospital was accepted with regret by the Hospital Board yesterday. Dr. Randell will relinquish his duties on December 22.

Lieutenant Kennedy, w-ho was in charge of the guard of honour for the Governor-General yesterday, collapsed at the conclusion of the public farewell and expired at 10 o’clock last night. He was a returned soldier about 35 years of age and was married with a young family. Heart failure is supposed to have been the cause of his death.

Mr. Sloan Morpeth, who severs his connection with the Maungakiekie Golf Club to-morrow to take up a position in Australia, was tendered an informal farewell dinner by nearly 40 members of the club on Saturday evening. The club captain, Mr. H. M. Rogerson, and Mr. H. Randrup made eulogistic speeches concerning Mr. Morpeth’s services to the club and to golf in New Zealand generally.

Mr. F. W. Humphries, manager of the Union Steamship Company’s Oamaru branch, retires on superannuation on December 31. Mr. Humphries, who is an old New Plymouth boy, joined the service 41 years ago in Sydney, where . he remained for 25 years, being traffic manager in that office when appointed manager at Oamaru. Mr. Humphries will be succeeded by Mr. P. C. Hodge in the course of a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Humphries intend taking a holiday trip to Vancouver and San Francisco,' returning via Tahiti, and they will leave by the Aorangi in January.
