CHILDREN’S CALF REARING

- -—1 JUDGES IN SOUTH TARANAKI. ANIMALS IMPROVING IN TYPE. The generally improving type of calf being paraded before the judges in the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs’ calf-rearing competitions has been favourably commented on by the adjudicators, who consider that fact alone more than justifies the continuation of the movement. In South Taranaki the judging of group 8, Makaka, Rowan, Kaponga and Kaponga Convent schools, was completed yesterday by Messrs. R. Syme (charts), A. T. Wills (condition) and J. A. Pettigrew (dairy type). The calves paraded by Makaka school children were considered a fine lot, even in both condition and dairy type. Group 9 will be judged on Monday, the schools to be visited being Ohangai (10 a.m.), Whakamara (11.5 a.m.), and Mokoia (1.15 p.m.). Yesterday’s results are: —

When Albert Edward Dixon claimed to recover possession of a house in Richmond Street, Patea, tenanted by Frank Williams, in the Patea Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., drew attention to the fact that protection for tenants under the Housing Act could not be claimed in cases where rents were in arrears.

Notice to quit the premises, owned by plaintiff, had been given by registered letter on September 16, said plaintiff’s counsel, Mr. R. C. Rutherford. Plaintiff contended that rent for 16 weeks was owing. Mr. T. E. Roberts, who appeared for defendant, inquired if plaintiff knew, of any other house in Patea to which defendant could go with his family. Plaintiff: No, because no one would let him in. Houses are difficult to get in Patea at this time of th© year. In reply to the magistrate plaintiff said he had not thought of suing for the rent which was owing. An order for possession in three days was made in favour ■of plaintiff, who was also allowed costs amounting to £1 19s. /'■
