THE BOY SCOUTS
* KAPONGA TROUP.
(Notes by “Scouter.”)
The monthly meeting of the troop committee was held on Friday evening last, when the following members were present: Rev. P. J. Cossum (chairman), Messrs. H. Brewer, J. Tattersall, R. Gwyn (Scoutmaster) and C. A. Corder (secretary). The Scoutmaster reported that the Cubs and Scouts had been separated, and now paraded on different nights. The Cubs, in charge of Cubmaster O. Betts, paraded on Wednesday night, and the Scouts on Friday evening.
The average attendance of the troops for the month was 8 Bper cent. It has been decided to hold a combined Cub camp at Eltham during the summer vacation. Cubmaster C. Hitchcock will be in charge of the camp, assisted by a group of assistants. The indications are that 40 boys will be under canvas. Mr. Hitchcock has interviewed all of the parents of Hawera Cubs,, and reports that in many cases he was disappointed at the response given. From a training point of view a week in camp is essential. The boys learn more in this period than probably in the whole of the year’s ordinary parades. Strict supervision and discipline are exercised, and in unselfish camp service a’boy learns to appreciate doing a good turn for others. \.
