SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
Tho monthly meeting of the school committee was held on Thursday evening. Present: Messrs. G. Hutton (chairman), H. H. Gilshnan, S. Beere, P. Dalrymple, H. Davey, A. Raynor (secretary) and W. H. Burgess (headmaster). Tho headmaster (Mr. W. H. Burgess) reported that the roll number was : Primary 176, attendance 159; secondary 34, attendance 32. Tho third term examination in the primary department was well under way, and tho standard of work being shown was very good, indeed. Mr. Caigou was on sick leave
till December 13, his place being filled by Miss Jones. Tho latest report of Mr. Caigou was that he was progressing well. There was a bird’s nest in the wall of the secondary department, which if not removed soon would cause mortality amongst their feathered friends. The proficiency examination was to, take place on December 9. Tho chairman reported that the chairman of the Education Board (Mr. S. G. Smith) and the architect (Mr. Moore) had paid a visit to the Opunake .schools. Tho architect agreed with the proposal of the committee to make a tool shed, and both were well pleased with the improvement made at the secondary department’s playing area and gave the impression that tho committee would receive a full subsidy on the expenditure on the playing area. The chairman stated that the Education Board deputation was primarily to inspect the 'need for increased room at the secondary school. Tho room was sufficient for 35 pupils, and next year 44 pupils would be in a space sufficient for only 35 pupils. Accounts amounting to about £l2 were passed for payment.
