PRODUCE OF CANTERBURY

WEATHER AFFECTS THE MARKET.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.

Christchurch, Last Night.

Interest in the grain and produce market is centred around the new season s prospects and it is too early for any expression, of ideas... as to probable values. Tho general impression, however, is that there will bo a shorter crop of practically all classes of seeds, although the- rain of the last fortnight has improved the prospects in many respects. The crop of Plains cocksfoot, also the Peninsular output and ryegrass, should be improved as a result. ° The small carry-over in all classes of seeds except cowgrass should ensure a ready market for the new crop. There is no change in values, but offers of new season’s southern ryegrass have been made at 6s 64 a bushel for ma-chine-dressed for March-april delivery, but with merchants disinclined to speculate on this high basis the price of pool wheat has been advanced as since the beginning of tho month, being now fixed at 6s 6d f.o.b. South Island. The additional penny is to cover storage charges. Oats have firmed up to 3s 8 1 /od for A Gartons and 3s 7 J / 3 for B’s Chaff is unaltered, but now that the rain has come the market is not so keen. On. truck values are up to £5 17s 7d f.o.b. South Island to £7 l'2s 6d. There has been a slowing down of forward business in potatoes due to the improvement in the weather.
