PRICE-CUTTING BY SHOPMEN
AUCKLAND RETAILERS MOVING. By Tolograph.—Press Awcetetlna. Auckland, Nov. 22. A meeting, attended, by about 30 shopkeepers, formed a committee to make arragements for a mass meeting of city shopkeepers to fully consider the matter of cut-rate trading and decide on some course of action. The convenor of the meeting, Mr. Harold Schmidt, advocated a shopkeepers’ federation to induce manufacturers and merchants to discontinue giving bonuses and discounts on the purchase of large quantities. He thought that an effort should be made to blacklist cutrate shops and if these failed similar steps should be taken with merchants who encouraged them. If small retailers were forced out of existence and the city run by two or three large stores, the shops would be left empty and there would be an alarming increase in unemployment among shop assistants.
