AUTOMOBILE YEAR BOOK

EXPRESSION OF APPRECIATION. Many expressions of appreciation of the efforts of the South Taranaki Automobile Association, which resulted in the publication of the 1929 year • book, have been received by the secretary, Mr. W. G. Walkley, from all quarters, and are an indication of the value of such publications to motorists generally. Letters have been received from various automobile associations from Auckland to Invercargill, and in most cases they ask for information which will enable such bodies to follow the lead given by South Taranaki. “Its production shows care and thought, and is a credit to all concerned in its completion,” is the opinion advanced by the secretary to the Napier association. The publication is referred to by the secretary of the Wanganui association as being the best all-round year book that he has yet seen. The councils of both Auckland and Wellington associations congratulate the association upon the very fine production, and the chairman of the latter body speaks of it as being an inspiration to others throughout New Zealand. That the South Taranaki Association is apparently making excellent progress, is the opinion expressed by the secretary of the Southland association, and in offering the congratulations of the Otago Motor Club the secretary of that body refers to the sound financial position disclosed. Such wide-spread appreciation is much valued by the South Taranaki Association, and is some recompense for the considerable. work incurred in the publication of the year book.

HAWERA OPERA HOUSE TALKIES. “THE JAZZ SINGER” MATINEE. Warner Bros.’ supreme talkie triumph, Al Jolson in “The Jazz Singer,” opens with a special matinee to-day at the Hawera . Opera House. Jolson, in his first motion picture, outclasses even his spectacular record as a king of jazz. The story is that of a Jewish boy who ran away from an orthodox home to conquer Broadway. At the pinnacle of success, he is confronted with the problem of returning to appear in the synagogue in place of his dying father, or staying to win the lady and tho praise of the world. The cast is headed by May McAvoy, Warner Oland, Eugenie Besserer and Otto Lederer. Al Cohn wrote the s - nario. The play is based on Samson Raphaelson’s success. Alan Crosland directed. An attractive programme of talkie short subjects will also be screened in support of “The Jazz Singer” and will include Miller and Farrell (entertainers), Reb Spikes and Follies (Premier Coloured Orchestra), Allan Prior (Australian tenor and star of “The Student Prince”) and Clyde Cook (classic comedian of the screen in the comedy “Lucky in Love”). Tho booking for this evening is heavy and intending patrons are advised to reserve their seats at Miss Blake’s.
