JUDGING ARRANGEMENTS MADE. MOVEMENT IN SOUTH TARANAKI. The receipt of a further £l7 in cash, some valuable cups and several gold medals to stimulate interest in the boys’ and girls’ club movement, was announced at a meeting of the general committee of the South Tranaki Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs’ Association, held at Hawera yesterday. There were present Messrs. G. Ford (chairman), J. D. Scott, H. E. Johnson, E. S. Betts, R. Syme and E. K. Cameron. It was stated that the association had a credit balance of approximately £6O. The following donations were acknowledged:—Mr. H. Betts, sen., £1 17s. 6d.; Stratford A. and P. Association, £2 25.; A. J. Mills and Co., Ltd., £2 25.; Mr. A. G. Bennett, £1 Is.; A. H. Turnbull and Co., Ltd., £1 Is.; N.Z. Co-op. Marketing Association, £1 Is.; Mr. J. J. Patterson, £2 25.; Hawera Co-op. Dairy Co., £2 2s.;' Ngaere Co-op. Dairy Co., £3 35.; Mr, J. Cocker, 10s. An intimation was received from Messrs. Hodder and Tolley, Ltd., that the firm was prepared to donate a challenge cup for the calf-rearing section. It was decided' that the cup should - be for the champion in the Shorthorn-Friesian class. Mr. D. P. F. Malone advised that he would give a gold medal for the best type calf in the Kaponga group. Acknowledgment was made of a promised donation by Mr. J. Pettigrew of a gold medal for the best-handled calf in the group in which the Pihama school exhibits. It was announced that Mr. A. T. Wills had given a special prize of £3 for the best group of three type heifers, irrespective of breed, and from any one group. The secretary (Mr. E. K. Cameron) and Mr, R. Syme were deputed to confer with Mr. Wills regarding conditions for the competition. Votes of thanks were accorded the donors of the trophies. In discussing the engraving of names on the Henry A. Lane shield, Mr. Syme stated that the shield had been promised in 1920, but had only arrived in 1928. In the first year a competition hi been held, in which Rawhitiroa and Ohangai schools had tied for first place. In the subsequent years, owing to the non-ar-rival of the shield, no competition had been held. But in that period the movement, inaugurated in Taranaki, had grown, ami when the trophy arrived it had been allocated for Dominion-wide competition. Tjkorangi school had been the winners in 1927-28 and Ararata in 1928-29. The donors had been communicated with, and had no objection to the winners’ names in each competition being engraved. It was decided that the names of Rawhitiroa and Ohangai schools, as winners of the competition in 1920-21 should be engraved on the shield. The calf-judging itinerary as drawn up and published was approved. Several trophies for competition were exhibited, including the Webb Challenge Cup for annual competition in mangolds, with a miniature for the winner, and the Turner Challenge Cup for the champion calf in the Jersey-Ayrshire class. The secretary reported that all other trophies and badges were being packed for distribution to the schools. SWIMMING SEASON OPENED. HAWERA AMATEURS’ SPORT.
