ENTERTAINMENTS

EVERYBODY’S “TALKIES.” MATINEE TO-DAY AT 2 P.M. Fox Movietone has moved from the wild open spaces of “In Old Arizona” to 1 the wide open places of old Manhattan. In “Speakeasy,” the first all-dialogue melodrama of the Gay White Way, which commences at Everybody’s “talkies” to-day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Director Benjamin Stoloff has assembled an exceedingly capable cast, composed mainly of Broadway stage stars, and welded them into a smooth and sparkling production. Salaams to Stoloff! Paul Page and Lola Lane, the former as a middleweight champion, the latter as a newspaper woman, carefully delineate their roles. Then there’s Helen .Ware, Warren Hymer, Joseph Cawthorne and a long list of others. Interwoven with the story is a medley of sights and sounds; the Madison Square Garden, the Belmont Park race track, the roar of the subways, the hectic night clubis. “Speakeasy” should be liked by all patrons as it enjoyed highly successful seasons in all the principal cities of New Zealand. The supporting “talkie” shorts will include Fox Movietone News, “Voices of Italy,” and “In Holland”. (novelty). Intending patrons are advised to book. PEOPLE’S “TALKIES.” BIG MATINEE TO-DAY 2 P.M In “Fashions in Love,” the latest Paramount all-talking picture commencing a season at the People’s “talkies” to-day at 2 p.m. and to-night at 8 p.m., one of the most popular and wellknown figures of the English stage plays in support of Adolphe Menjou, the star. She is Fay Compton, whose lyric soprano voice and fine talking are a distinct asset to this fine picture. . Miss Compton was brought specially from England under contract to Paramount, and in addition to her , beauty she plays an admirable part as the sympathetic wife of the temperamental musician, played by Menjou. Menjou speaks with a French accent, in keeping with the role, and the two form an ideal combination. “Fashions in Love” is the story of the loves of a famous musician and how he is cured of his flirtations by his wife. The supporting programme of snappy musical and talking featurettes includes “The Harmony Boys” (singing duo), “Accidental Treatment” (an all-talking British De Forest comedy starring Earnie Lolinga), and “A Bird in the Hand” (an excellent com-edy-drama featurette starring .Lois Wilson). OPERA HOUSE. TWO BIG FEATURETTES TO-NIGHT “The House of Horror,” a First National attraction, and “The Forger,” a British special, will provide wonderful silent entertainment at the Opera House to-night. “The House of Horror” stars Chester Conklin and Louise Fazenda, and tells the story of a mysterious i stranger who brings a summons for the couple to come to New York to visit ' an aged uncle, an antique collector and : a miserly recluse. Once inside that strange combination of store and house, ■ things happen that keep Louise and ; Chester in a lather of excitement. Benjamin Christensen directed and the cast includes Thelma Todd, James Ford and ; William V. Mong. “The Forger” ia an ] adaptation of Edgar Wallace’s great thriller. Mr. Wallace’s remarkable < knowledge of crime has been put to 1 - excellent use in this story, which has i

been adapted and well produced as a screen play. As is usual with Mr. Wallace, the identity of “The Forger," known far and wide as “The ; Clever One," is wrapped in mystery. .The evidence points in a damning fashion to a rich young man newly married. Tho evidence piles up against him, complicated and intensified by a mysterious murder, but, as we have been asked to keep the climax of the film a secret, we cannot tell you any more of tho story. Nevertheless, the story is unfolded with all Mr. Wallace’s keen eye* to drama, and the audience is carried along irresistibly to the denouement. Nigel Barrie and Lilian Rich head the big cast. There is a Gazette to open and the Opera House orchestra will be in attendance. '
