MAHOENUI CHILDREN’S BALL

SUCCESS OF FANCY DRESS DANCE. A successful fancy dress ball for children was held in the public hall, Mahoenui, on Friday, and notwithstanding the inclemency of the -weather, a large and enthusiastic company assembled. The hall was gay with coloured streamers, greenery, and red and white flowers. The proceedings commenced at 8 pan. with a grand parade of the 34 entrants. The variety of colour, combined with the original designs of the costumes, made a very ple'asing spectacle. The children danced till 10 p.m., and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Their dances were gracefully executed, and reflected much credit on their teachers, Mrs. Avery, Miss Armstrong, Miss Boddy, Mrs. Norman Jones, Mrs. -Andrew Old, Miss Roberts, Miss J. Rattenbury and Mr. Stanley Roberts. Mrs. MeNeice (Awakino) played the music. The girls in fancy dresses were:—E. Armstrong, First Delivery; E. Boddy, Ace of Hearts; A. G’roall, Black Butterfly; B. Armstrong, American Negro; C. Croall, Beaten; F. Elliott, Jester; J. Elliott, Green Elf; B. Jones, Russian Dancer; C. Jones, Arab Chief; W. Moir, Zulu; P. Moir, Chinese Boy; J. O’Donoghue, Tennis; R. Ridling, Robinson Crusoe; D. Ridling, Indian; H. Ridling, Sailor; J. Ridling, Red Soldier; J. Ross, Nigger; F; Sole, Blue Devil; A. Sole, Gollywog; G. Sole, Father Christmas; R. Summers, Chinese Boy. The difficult task of judging was in the capable hands of Mrs. Avery*, and Mrs. McNeice, who made the following awards:—Girls, best dress, Sarah Wetere; girls’ most original, Sole; boys’, best dress, William Moir; boys’, most original, Russell Ridling; best dancers, girls, Peggy Moir; best dancer, girls (under 9), Nancy Moir; best dancer, boys, Billy Jones; best dancer, boys (under 9), Jackie Ridling. Supper provided by the ladies of the district was taken at 10 p.m., after which the adults took the floor for dancing. Those present included: —Mrs. L. Northern (Awakino), green georgette; Miss Armstrong, steel grey georgette witli frills and net; Miss Boddy, mauve georgette; Miss Chapman, blue overdress; Miss. Gribbon, pale blue crepe de chine; Miss Roberts, black crepe de chine; Miss Rangi, red georgette; Miss J. Rattcnbury, green and. gold lace; Miss M. Rattcnbury, pale pink crcpc de chine; Miss Rees, pale pink georgette; Miss Wetere,.sea green crepe de chine. Mrs. McNeice provided the dance music, and Mr. Tubman was Master of Ceremonies. Mr. Jack Tubman thanked all who had given their services in organising an enjoyable function. He thanked Mrs. Avery, Mrs. Summers and Mr. Stanley Old, who had donated prizes.
