BRITISH FISHING INDUSTRY
PLEA MADE FOR ASSISTANCE. British Wireless. Rugby, Nov. 20. Sir Robert Hamilton, Liberal member for the Orkney Islands, introduced a motion calling for immediate action by the Government to assist the fishing in- ' dustry, which, he said, had been going through a very bad time. The motion proposed that the Government should relieve the fishing harbours of excessive financial burdens, provide a system of harbour development, and secure an international agreement regarding fishing grounds in the North Sea and elsewhere, which are subject to dispute, and generally to establish the industry on a sound basis. Sir Robert Hamilton suggested loans to fishermen on easy terms to enable them to replace their gear. Mr. N. E. Buxton, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, accepted the motion. He said action was already being taken in the directions indicated. An inquiry as to where and whether further action was needed was about to be conducted by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister. Mr. Buxton mentioned that about £75,000 yearly was being spent on research.
