CRICKET IN TARANAKI

. TOWN V. COUNTRY MATCH ’ COUNTRY PLAYERS NOMINATED. PREPARATIONS FOR NEXT WEEK. 2 Two Country players from North Taranaki, Stan. GCddy (Tarisrutangi) and J. Sarten (Tikorangi) have been nominated by the Taranaki Cricket Association for the Country team to play Town at Wellington next Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately several other players -who might have been nominated —S. A. Lay and J. Chee vers (South Taranaki), and C. Lash, O. M. Nasmith, C. N. Kingstone and C. G. Clarke (North Taranaki) —were not available, but at the same time congratulations are extended to the two Country players whom the selectors. (Messrs. J. Brown and H. R. Penny) have deemed worthy of nomination. Their batting averages certainly record a successful season to date. The matter of immediate moment in Taranaki cricket is the North v. South match for the Graham Cup at Hawera to-morrow week. The North Taranaki selectors will select the north team tomorrow night, and nobody envies them their task, for to pick a team on form is going to be a most difficult matte':. In the first place, although the end of the first round has been reached in both the New Plymouth senior A and North Taranaki Country competitions, there are many leading players in New Plymouth who have not played inore than one or two matches. The bowling and batting averages to date show that the batting in New Plymouth this season has been unusually poor, and that in the Country Association unusually high. Whether the New Plymouth bowling is better than usual remains to be seen. The New Plymouth bowling and batting averages in the senior A competition to date are as follow. In the batting, the figures are given for all players who have an average of double figures. The bowling averages are given in the order of total number of wickets taken, not in order of average, as this is often misleading, just as the other method is misleading to a certain extent:— BOWLING.

BATSMAN WITH NO AVERAGE.

Sheppard enjoys the unique honour of being the only batsman in the ?«?rth Taranaki senior A competition without an average. In four innings he has been four times not out, and his average therefore is infinity. Some of the Country players’ batting performances are worthy of comment. Stan. Giddy has scored a 63, 70 not out and 80 riot out in five innings. J. Sarten (Tikorangi) scored a 21, 43 not out and 116 not out in five matches.

While giving the Country players every credit for their splendid season to date, people interested in cricket should, not expect too much or them when playing under strange circumstances on strange wickets. . Matches between Town and Country players over a number of years have usually resulted in a win for Town, due largely to failure by Country players to reproduce their usuajl form when up against new bowling on different wickets. It is unlikely that the difference between the Town and the Country batting is anything like that indicated by the batting averages. The North v. South match

at Hawera next week, and the Town v. Country and Country v. High School matches in North Taranaki will .giye .'S? a better indication of the respective standards of play. CLUB CRICKET DISAPPOINTING. . ■ Club cricket in New Plymouth this ; season has been rather flat, one of the most disappointing things being th© heavy defeat of Western Park last urday at the hands of New High School, with its constantly ohang- X ing personnel, cannot be expected to i teams, but one would like to see stand up year after year to the other other teams more even than was case in Pukekura Park last Saturday, Certainly Western Park were without the' services of their stock bowler Quickfall. Whereas the selection of club teams is a matter upon which one hesi- '? tates to intrude, yet to a great many people it seems strange that the Western Park selectors, in spite of continued failure on the part of some members of the senior tetlm, have not yet given - . Jackson a turn. One calls to mind sev- '• eral occasions last season when Jacksoil'pulled the match out of the'fire. Old Boys are suffering from a little embarrassment of riches, and for their W match against New Plymouth to-mov- ■ row, which is expected, to be a hard one, they are dropping either I. W. Palmer or Batten. Kirwin is also out, owing. Li to pressure of business. The other tea members to play to-morrow are Lash, K. Fookes, L. Petty, A. Petty, Brown, Eggleton, Ewart, Saxton, H. Fookes and ; X P. Allen. The last named has not long M returned from Varsity, and is playing his first game. Nasmith (New Plymouth) is due for '-fi a score. So is George Clarke. They may make it to-morrow. . ' Quickfall is definitely out of the gam» ' for some time, owing to an injury to his arm. k , .. ... •.. _ ....... TEAMS FOR TO-MORROW.
