INTERESTS OF MOTORISTS

FACILITIES FOR TOURISTS TARANAKI ASSOCIATION MEETS. CAMPING GROUND CO-OPERATION. Co-operation between the Belt Road, Fitzroy and Huatoki camp sites during the rush holiday period, to obviate motorists being stranded at nightfall before they could settle down in one camp when they found the first visited full, was suggested by Dr. R. J. R. Mecredy, at a meeting of of the executive of the Taranaki Automobile Association last night, as. a .further convenience for visitors. It was left to the executive and Mr, F. Amoore (borough representative) to) arrange a joint conference with the different camp site authorities and the New Plymouth Tourist and Expansion League. ■) Mile posts for speedometer tests were in order. ,on the north , and south roads, said Mr.' R. ArOa. -, It was decided to thank'the:. Taranaki County Council for its action.', ..

1 ,A suggestion was made that the association should erect half-mile posts; for rive miles.

• : / The only correct'test was oh the Devon . • Road, Mr. Aroa said. Deviations on other roads would make the original surveys incorrect/ /.,_..r • .. '••• ' The recent accident at Mangaone Hill resulting in the death of a child was the cause of a decision that the chairman should confer with Mr. Aroa regarding the control of the traffic to and from the'Bell Block aerodrome on busy days. Signs are to be placed on the association’s agents’ offices at Okato, Oakura, Waitara and Urenui. : ~ . L Mr. Weston raised the question of parking in.the .streets of New Plymouth. He thought the borough council should endeavour to keep tip with the problem, as it became more acute with the growth of motor traffic, but Mr. Amoore pointed out that the problem was difficult with the number of narrow streets in the borough. ) A donation of £2 2s. was made to the hospital radio fund. .. Messrs. W. C. Weston and W. T. Guild were appointed to join the Chamber of Commerce in an inspection of the proposed Mahoenui deviation. , . LEVY BY HEADQUARTERS. A levy of Cd. per member is to be made on all affiliated associations with a mininiuin. of £5O and a maximum of | £250 by the North Island Motor Union, according to a letter received from the union. The membership is to be based on that at August 31, 1929, whether financial or otherwise. All travelling expenses of delegates to the union will in future be paid by the union. The secretary was authorised to pay the levy amounting to £37 10s. • '. .' .. A copy of a schedule of charges to motor parties using the. camping site at Aramoho Park was forwarded by the Wanganui City Council. The Auckland association notified that it was publishing a 27-page booklet of camping grounds in the North Island, but as there had been a certain amount of “pirating” the information was being copyrighted. The association did not wish to prevent the information being available to members of other associations, as it was its object to co-oper-ate with other associations. It was decided to purchase 100 copies. The Taranaki Hospital Board's reply to the association’s suggestion of erecting direction signs to the hospital was that no specific complaints had reached the board of anyone being unable to find his way to the hospital. A suggestion by the board that the association should erect signposts did not meet with the executive’s approval. The Waitara Borough Council wrote that it had decided to fix new speed limits in the town, and asked if the association had any comment to make. The secretary pointed out the whole district tp which the by-law applied did not extend more than a mile and a half, but Mr. Amoore thought the limits were too low. TO ASSIST TEACHERS. A favourable hearing was given a deputation from the Teachers’ Summer School New Plymouth Committee, which . made a request that the association should give assistance in conveying the teachers for an outing it. was hoped to arrange at the North Egmont Hotel. Mr. J. Goldsbury said 480 teachers were expected to be present at the school, which would be a national gathering, and would be the biggest of its kind yet held in New Zealand. In the past refresher courses had been held in New Plymouth for teachers in the district, but at this national school teachers would be present from all parts bf New Zealand. The committee hoped to interest all public bodies in New Plymouth in the school. All that was asked of the Axitomobile Association was its co-operation and support, as many. teachers would have their own cars, Mr. A. D. N. Train said. The teachers at the school would be paying for their lectures and for their attendance at the school, and he thought that would make them all the more worthy of consideration. The committee wanted to make them feel their stay had been a pleasant one, and that New Plymouth had made the 1930 school a greater step further than those of previous years. ‘ Mr W. L. Wagstaff pointed out that sport's bodies in New Plymouth were throwing their grounds open to the teachers. Mr< Go i ds bury said strong features of the school would ..be post-luncheon addresses by noted professors of such a nature that they would interest the public Part of the course Would be intensive lectures which would interest only the teachers,, and part would be general, especially in the evening, when the lectures would be of a type the public would appreciate. It Jas hoped the Governor-General, if his engagements allowed, would be able to Mr. F. H. Blundell said the association had been very willing in the past to give all assistance, but lately it had become difficult. He thought they could look more favourably on that apPl Mr? Weston thought the town should be very glad to show the interest it had in the school, and on his motion the deputation was asked to place its request before the annual meeting.- _ Those present were Messrs. 1. H. Blundell (chairman), W. C. Weston, EL ~C..'Sturm, F. Amoore, .R. Aroa, W. T.
