ANNUAL MEETING HELD. THE CHURCH IN TARANAKI. The annual meeting of the Taranaki Archdeaconry Board was held in St. Mary’s Hall, New Plymouth, yesterday. The Bishop of Waikato, the Rt. Rev. C. A. Cherrington, presided. Others present were: Archdeacon F. G. Evans, Canons E. H. Strong (St. Mary’s New Plymouth), G. H. Gavin (Waitara), H. R. B. Gillespie (Fitzroy), the Revs. G. T. Beale (Stratford), J. N. Thompson (Inglewood), J. Adams (Okato), K. Hadfield (Waitara), W. A. Hamilton (Whangamomona), W. S. C. Stephens (St. Alary’s New Plymouth), W. A. Scott Uruti), Messrs. W. H. Skinner, T. C. Fookes, A. Grace (St. Mary’s New Plymouth), F. Copestake, H. C. Gentles (Fitzroy), J. W. Hamlin, W. N. Ackland (Waitara), F. Brown, I. Parfitt, R. L. Dansey (Inglewood), E. B. Corbett, George Gibson (Okato), W. Mclnnes, and E. Marfell (Stratford), S. S. Butt, A. H. Martin (Uruti), R. Mqunsey, E. B. Roberton (Whangamomona), M. P. Taylor, E. Brown (Maori members), Martin (Pukearuhe). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. Newell (Fitzroy), H. J. M. Wells (Waitara), W. Honeyfield (Okato), W. Rumball (Whangamomona), and J. Edwin (Maori member).

The Rev. J. Adams was appointed clerical secretary, and Mr. Ackland lay secretary. The Bishop welcomed Captain Watson, the originator of the duplex system of church finance, who, he said, they were fortunate to have at the meeting. He was thankful that Archdeacon Evans was sufficiently recovered from his recent serious illness. He hoped the Archdeacon would grow stronger and stronger in health, and so be able to continue his valuable help to the Church. (Applause.) Captain Watson gave an address on the duplex envelope system in the morning, while in the afternoon the Rev. J. N. Thompson opened a discussion on religious instruction for the young. The following motion over the name of Mr. T. C. Fookes was carried: “That as a matter of vital importance to the welfare of the Church and tire effective and successful working of all parishes and parochial districts within the Taranaki Archdeaconry, in order to secure and maintain the really practical and steady support of all members of our Church in everything pertaining thereto, all vicars be respectfully urged to inaugurate and carry into effect a systematic 'scheme for visiting their church people regularly in their homes.” The Bishop explained Mr. Fookes had brought' this motion up at the lay conference. Since then he, as Bishop, had circularised the clergy on the subject. Archdeacon /and Mrs. F. G. Evans entertained the delegates at luncheon and afternoon t&a. The hosts were accorded a vote of thanks. Other votes of thanks were passed to the vicar and churchwardens for the use of the St. Alary’s hall for the meeting, and to the Press.
