WOMEN'S NATIONAL RESERVE

ARMISTICE DAY REMEMBRANCE. Each Armistice Day it is the custom of the Hawera branch of the -Women’s National Reserve to entertain the mothers and wives of ex-soldiers at afternoon tea. The first function was'held in 1919 and the custom has continued throughout the years —years in which the strength of the Reserve has dwindled throughout New Zealand until the Hawera and Wellington branches are the only remaining active ones — yesterday being the 10th occasion on which the tea has been held.

There were over 100 women present • at the gathering, which was held at the Carlton. The president, Mrs. E. A. Pacey, welcomed the guests, each of 1 whom was given a posy, and expressed pleasure at the large attendance. Dur--0 ing the afternoon Miss D. OPERA HOUSE TO-NIGHT. “WORDS AND MUSIC” FINALLY. Loin Moran makes her debut as singer and dancer in “Words and Musib,” Fox Movietone musical revue, screening for the last time to-night at the Opera House, Hawera. “Words and Music” is an ■all-talking-singing-dancing production. Mtes Moran sings two numbers as well as playing the lead throughout the story. Co-featured with her are Tom Patricola and David Percy. One of Miss Moran’s numbers is called “The Presentation,” with twelve dancing boys, twelve show girls and a chorus of forty. Entering down a long staircase in the wake or the beautifully gowned show girls, Miss Moran first does a beautiful dance on the stairs, then sings “Yours Sincerely,” with the twelve boys. She also does a waltz number to the strains of “Beauty” with the boys. The music for “The Presentation” and “Hunting” numbers in which Miss Moran appears, was written by Dave Stamper, whose songs have graced many Broadway productions for a dozen years. The lyrics were written by Harlan Thompson, •author of several internationally popular musical comedies. Other songs in the picture have been written by William Kernall and Con Conrad, Sidney Mitchell and Archie Gottler. Intending patrons are again advised to reserve their seats at Miss Blake’s. There is an excellent programme of short subjects which includes Fox News, the King of England’s speech, a comedy, and vaudeville number.
