BOARD OF MANAGERS MEETS. TUITION FOR APPRENTICES. . i “I. have made inquiries regarding the working of the apprenticeship, commit- , tees,” stated the. principal, Mr.. A. H. K. Amess, at last night’s meeting of. the Board of Managers of the Stratford Technical High School. “It appears that committees covering the work of ap prentices over the whole of laiana'Ki, in the motor and. engineering, trades,, are already set up but have never functioned in. Stratford. 1 am making arrangements to have these committees begin work in this district. The .committees are anxious to do all in their power to see that the lads have 'proper training. The report 1 went -on to record the fact that the school roll was as follows — First year commercial 23, second year 10, third, and fourth year 7. Total in commercial classes 40. First year science 40, second year 23, third and fourth 29. Total in science classes 02» * • ' First "year general 38, second.- year 26, third and fourth 33. Total in general 97. ■ First year trades . and engineering 14, second year 12. Total in trades classes 26. I'otal at school, 255. Attendance during the month had been "ood and the work. was proceeding satis-, faetorily. At .present . pupils were train-, ing for the annual athletic sports which would be held on October' 31. 1 Mr. H. Trimble , was re-elected chairman, eulogistic reference being'made to his long- service , in the cause of educa-: tiori. Mr. Trimble suitably replied and thanked •’the'local bodies whom he represented for their. expression -of continued confidence. • • The' chairman congratulated members who? had been re-elected and welcomed new members. ... • . The department advised that no subsidy would be allowed on the proceeds from the. recent bazaar. . Strong disapproval at the department s attitude was expressed by members, Mr. McAllister, pointing out that' the school actually received the benefit of the bazaar. It seemed to him that the reply was not even in line with the policy of the department, and the board should not be content to accept it. It was finally decided to bring the matter to the notice of Mr. AV. J. Polson, M.P., with the request that he make representations in the proper quarter. After discussion on • the question of ■ formulating a scheme for insuring pupils against accident at the school the Technical Association was asked to send forward any scheme it had in mind for the information of the board. An additional sewing machine is to be procured for. use in the school. Committees were re-elected as for the previous year, except that Mr. E. S. Rutherfurd’s name was substituted for that of Canon Kayll on the appointments committee, and that of Mr. D. Shaw in place of Mr. S. Macalister on the ‘works committee. The offer of Mr. Shaw to.lend to the school a set .of volumes connected with building and joinery work was accepted with thanks. CARS COLLIDE IN BROADWAY. Considerable damage waS suffered yesterday by a motor-car driven by Mr. F. Hyland when it was involved in a collision with another car driven by Mr. A. Manoy. . „ Mr. Hyland was turning in Broadway when the impact occurred. The right side of the car was severely damaged, the shock causing a rea- tyre to burst. Both lamps and a spiing and mudguards were broken on Mr. Manoy’s car. CRICKET CLUB’S PROGRAMME. MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The Stratford Cricket Club executive decided last night to enter a team in the North Taranaki Thursday competition, the secretary (Mr. V. J. Henderson) reporting that the following players would be available: —Owen, Williams, Casey, Fowler, Jones, Carryer, Whiting, Darbyshire, R. Butcher and Neal. These were elected members of the club. The South Taranaki cricket division asked if Stratford could enter two teams in the senior grade. Hawera could find only one team, and proposed playing a junior team which would be augmented by primary school boys. This meant there would be seven senior teams, thus making a bye every Saturday. If Stratford could play two senior teams, however, there would be no bye. In the Saturday junior competition there were only four Hawera teams. Should only these teams play in the competition there would be no travelling and the competition would survive. The younger players in Stratford could play on Thursday without entering a team in the Saturday competition. The secretary stated that as far as he knew there were only five senior teams without Stratford and if Stratford entered one team there would be a total of six but not necessity for byes. It was decided to adhere to the original decision to enter two teams, one senior and one junior. . The Domain Board will be advised that although the club had offered to contribute £3 towards laying down a pitch in Victoria Park this year, the club could not afford to make a yearly contribution for the upkeep of the pitch in addition to the ground fee.
