TARANAKI STOCK MARKET

SHORTAGE OF BEEF CATTLE ‘ DEMAND EXCEEDS THE SUPPLY. ’ RISE IN DAIRY STOCK PRICES. Reviewing the livestock market in Taranaki during the past week the Farmers’ Co-op. states HBeef.—The market for beef is practically unchanged and a marked scarcity is still apparent. Butchers are finding it difficult to obtain supplies locally at tvhat they consider a reasonable price; hence a fair amount, has been brought from outside, but in several instances this .has not been a very profitable, business, for after taking'into consideration, the state of the cattle after trucking a distance, etc., it lias been found that the • local production would have been the better proposition. Best heavy bullocks are. making.up to £l7 .10s, and £l4 to £l5 ■is being paid for lighter. sorts, whilst heavy quality cows and heifers are selling at from £l2 10s to £l6, and second quality at £lO to £ll 10s. • Store pattie.—Very little change has taken-/place in the store 1 market, and .good prices arc still being obtained. > It is practically certain , that for some time to come the demand will exceed the supply. This is .also applicable to othPr .districts, for. at the Masterton cattle fair recently store bullocks made up to £ll 10s and yearling well-bred steers sold at £6 10s to £7 4s. -Very few lines are offering locally, so that any that do come on to the market find a ready sale. ' Fat sheep.—Fat sheep continue to find ;a steady market and prices are no lower than those quoted in the previous report. Although there is not an over-supply* still sufficient find their way on to the market to fill local requirements. ' Best ewes are realising 32s' to' 33s Od, 29s to 31s being paid for lighter sheep, whilst . best prime wethers are saleable at 37s ,6d to. 38s. Prime b.f. hoggets are making up to 3,15. Store sheep. few hoggets have been sold during the past week,: and a few lines of ewes with lambs are beginning to change hands, although it is yet difficult to secure quotes of ewes, and lambs of outstanding quality. ' Best 5 and 6year ewes with lambs at foot are changing hands at 33s to 37s fid, whilst young ewes with lambs are making £2 to £2 '2s fid. White faced hoggets are not too plentiful and any quoted find a ready sale, as. high as 34s being paid for best ewe hoggets and 26s for wether hoggets. Best 2 and 4-tooth wethers are making . 32sto 33s fid. > ■/.... ■ X Dairy stock.—The market during the week has taken, a rise, this being no doubt due to the recent warm rain. Generally speaking at this time last year traders were having rather a good spin, but such is not the case this year, for in many cases cattle are now selling at a lower price than was paid for them some weeks ago, but during the next few weeks prices should improve considerably. Best springing heifers close to profit are selling at from £l2 to £l5, and £lO to £l2 is being paid for second quality and calved heifers, whilst backward sorts are not required. Springing cows . are almost unobtainable, although a few .have been sold at from £ll to £l6 according to quality. Yearling heifers. —These are exceptionally scarce and any offered realise good prices, as high as £8 15s being paid in one or two instances, whilst cattle of good quality are saleable at £7 5s to £7 15s. M.T. 2-year heifers of good , colour have been selling at £7 to £8 ss, and mixed coloured sorts are making £5 10 s to £6 12s Cd. Small “hold-over” yearling heifers of good quality are also scarce, and although as high as £5 has been paid for this sort £4 to £4 10s is the ruling price. Pigs continue to sell well and the demand still exceeds the supply. Best weaners are making 16s to 225, with 25s to 27s fid for small stores, 29s to 37s fid for large stores and £2 to £2 12s fid for porkers. Sows with litters are making £4 to £7. Messrs. Newton King, Ltd., report for the week that limited quotations of beef are still the order of the day, necessitating a number of butchers’ requirements being filled from outside sources. Prices remain firm and purchases are be-

ing effected •* .figures, on a par with those ■of . last ■ w;eek/? ■//' •* he •X/ ■■'-.R Quotations of ewe mutton are still in the minority, and as stated in last report the majority of butchers’ requirements are bein£ filled from supplies of wethers. Prices " remain firm and requirements are being filled at the following figures: Fat wethers, 37s fid to 39s fid; good heavy fat ewes, 31s; fat ewes, 29s to 30s; fat hoggets, 30s. As yet few, if any, sales on a large scale have.'been effected of< store I 'sheep. The demand has a tendency to increase. ,A fair inquiry is in. evidence for straight lines of white-faced ewes and lambs, but as few of these are offering sales are not plentiful. Hoggets are being quoted in fair numbers, and as the. inquiry for this class, especially ewes, is good, ready sales are being effecte’. Sales during the past week have been effected as follow: Good 4 and 5-jear-old cweS''with, whitefaced lambs at foot, 38s to £2 0s 3d; others, 365; top quality white-faced ewe hoggets, 35s to 365; -others, 335;, best wether hoggets, 28s; others, 265. Information received from outside districts. reveals that numbers of forward-; delivery sales are being effected, but as prospective . purchasers in North Taranaki are inclined to be pessimistic about the prices that will be ruling later in; the season, sales on this basir are very few. Fair numbers of quotations for forward deliveiy sales are being received, and the -price's/-expected' range from ,24s to 25s for 4 and o-year-old ewes, while few younger sheep are being quoted. Wethdrs off the shears are being qiibted for sale on this basis, and these quotations range from 23s' to 26s according to the age and condition of the sheep. ' With the keen demand for all classes of store cattle and'in vie wof the fact that supplies are .insufficient to meet the demand, prices are in advance of those ruling at this period last year. With the warm rain during the week, the feed has started to' come away and as it gets a little more plentiful'the inquiry will naturally increase and prices may have a tendency to harden. The offerings at fortnightly fixtures consist - largely of store - and forward, cows, with fair numbers of yearling Jer-‘ gey and. Jersey-cross heifers,, while male cattle are conspicuous Jby their absence. Competition .is > keen and full-clearances are effected a\ satisfactory prices. Prices in the dairy cattle section are exceedingly gvod and .as there are Jew top-quality , cattle offering the medium sort are meeting, with a ready sale at prices in advance of those anticipated earli ■ in the year. Full benches of buyers are in attendance, at. practically all fixtures, arid spirited competition is resulting, in full clearances being effected at prices pleasing to vendors. At the Urenui sale on Monday there was a fait entry, of dairy cattle, but nothing outstanding was included. The offering came in for spirited competition and the prices ruling were in advance of those at previous fixtures in that centre. . Generally speaking the prices in Taranaki range as follow: . Best quality young Jersey cows, close to profit, £l6 to £l7; good sorts, £l2 to £l4; fair quality cattle, perhaps a little more backward, £9 to £lO 10s; aged and mixed-coloured sorts, £7 to. £8 10s; best quality Jersey heifers, at profit or in full milk, £l6 to £l7; good sorts, £l2 to £l4 10s; smaller sorts of good quality, £lO to £ll 10s; cattle of fair quality but more backward, £9 to £10; small, backward and mixed coloured sorts, £7 to £B. ’ Good entries of pigs are being submitted, and with the good benches of buyers spirited competition is in evidence and ready sales are the order of the day. Prices remain firm at last week’s rates. LONDON MARKETS. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Limited have received 0 the following advice from their London, house, dated October 9.
