BRED IN THE PURPLE

PHAR LAP’S BREEDING LINES BRILLIANT A.J.C. DEBBY WINNER. MAY PROVE ANOTHER STREPHON BARGAIN OF YEARLING SALES. When Phar Lap silenced the opin the Rosehill Guineas in such concincing fashion it was apparent that that nothing that he met in that field would trouble him over the longer distance of the A.J.C. Derby and Australia’s greatest hopes would . need to give of their best that day to worry him. He won —he strolled in' Like Stephon he has burst suddenly to the front rank and the spotlight of fame should be kept busy playfng on him in future. Unfortunately New Zealanders have never seen the son of Night Ra»d ana Entreaty race? but they can gauge his possibilities through Honour. Hon ° ul was the outstanding two-year-old oi the Dominion, and of the leading youngsters that showed tfieir paces last season, ne was elected the fittest to warrant support for Derby honours. Not even-the unorthodox methods adopted in training Honour can be forwarded as an excuse. foP Mr. Greenwood's colt was beaten pointlessly. " ' ? . . • The decisiveness of-the win emphasises forcefully what a brilliant three-year-old Phar Lap is, and through the announcer across the ether it could be clearly followed that he was never going at top and came away when he was asked to, winning on the bit in record time for the race. In the short two-year-old races last season Phar Lap was at a big disadvantage and consequently was not able to- unfold his brilliant finishing efforts th, t have characterised his races over longer distances this spring. It is not surprising that his first exposition o winning form was not until he scored ?n the Rosehill Maiden'Juvenile, but like the wonderful Strcphon he has been left until his three-year-old career to show the world how brilliant he really is. So convincing is his Derby win that lie now seems to be the warmest favourite in the V.R.C. Derby in many years, and New Zealanders will conndentally expect him to give Jim Scoble’s pupil, Carradale, all that he is looking for at Flemington. , There is no doubt that Carradale will be immensely improved with his races at Randwick and will strip a much fitter -horse next month, but there will be many to say that the erst-while New Zealander will 'again account for the Caravel colt. At least, the Flemington classic should provide a delectable morsel of classic racing- . . f Night Raid, Phar Lap’s sire, is one of the most stoutly bred horses that was eVer imported to Australia. He is by Radium (son of Bend Or) from Sentiment, by Spearmint (Carbine-Maid of the Mint), by Minting, (a son of the triple crown winner, Lord Lyon) from Flair. Flair was by St Frusquin (St. Simon-Isabel) from Glare, by Ayrshire (Hampton-Atlanta) from Footlight, by Cremorne from Paraffin (fourth dam of Heroic), was was by Blair Athol from Paradigm. . Winkie, the sire of Phar Lap’s dam, was by William the Third, one of the •greatest stayers sired by St. Simon, from Conjure. Entreaty's dam was Prayer Wheel, a daughter of Pilgrim’s Progress, who was a half-brother to that wonderful English stud matron, Canterbury Pilgrim, who left the brilliant racehorses and sires Swynford and Chaucer. The following is Phar Lap's complete record on the racecourse: — AT TWO.YEARS. Unplaced, 6.11, Rosehill Nursery Division, 5% furlongs, won by Exact, 8.6 — Unplaced, 7.3, Hawkcsbury T.Y.O. Phar Lap has proved a yearling bargain, for Mr. A. J. Davis secured him at the yearling sales at Trentham for IGOgns. He then leased the Night Raid gelding to the ex-New Zealand trainer Hughie Telford, and all of Phar Lap’s racing has been done on Sydney courses. His yearling full-brother is to be submitted at the Trentham sales in January, and there is no gainsaying that he will attract attention. Southern reports of the colt state that he is an exceptionally well-balanced youngster, possessing a fine set of logs, and when he is offered on behalf of his breeder, Mr. F. A. Roberts. Kaituna, there is every likelihood of his starting at the 1090 guinea mark.
