DOMINION STOCK MARKETS. FAT CATTLE AND SHEEP DOWN. Dunedin, Oct. 9. Fat cattle were cheaper .at the Burnside stock sales to-day, but stores remained firm at late rates. Fat sheep, too, suffered a decline, heavy sorts in particular being much cheaper than was the ease last week. Spring lambs met with a ready sale, and /pigs encountered a firm market. There were 247 head of fat cattle comprising principally prime bullocks with only a small proportion of cows and heifers. At the commencement of the sale there, was little decrease on last week’s rates, but with the last races there was a distinct drop. The average, decline on the day can be stated at from 10s to 15s per head. The best extra heavy prime bullocks made up to £2B 10s, and prime from £2O to £22; medium sorts made from £l7 10s to £l9; prime cows and heifers, to £lO 10s; and light medium from £lO 10s to £l4. The- small yarding of store cattle met with a good sale at .late rates A the entry being mostly freshly conditioned steers and well-grown three to four-year-old bullocks. The fat sheep . penning numbered about 1680 head, the greater proportion 'of -which was made up to good butchers’ wethers with only a few ewes, and not many light and medium sorts. Prices . for heavy sheep dropped badly, the decline being from 2s to 3s a head. Good handier weights met with a better fate, though they also suffered some reduction on late values. The best wethers made up to 52s 3d; prime heavies, to 475; mediums, to 375; and light from 29s to 345. A supply of 21 spring lambs of fairly choice quality met with good competition and prices on a par with those of last week. The market fo>r pigs was firm. The entries of stores and fats were not large, but the slightly improved rates of the past few weeks were well maintained. RATES AT ADDINGTON. STORE SHEEP FIRMER. Christchurch, Oct. 9. There was a. better entry of fat cattle at Addington this week and prices, except for heavy beef, were well up to recent rates. . Store sheep showed a little firming, while for lighter sheep in the fat section the demand was brisk and values increased. Store sheep.—A larger entry than has been the case lately and of improved quality. The tone of the sale was decidedly firmer, with little quotable change. Best halfbred ewe hoggets made 31s 8d to 32s Gd; best threequarterbred ewe hoggets, to 30s 4d; good . three-quarterbred ewe hoggets, 24s lOd to 26s lOd; good half bred wether hoggets, to 235; ordinary half bred wether hoggets, to 17s; best crossbred ewe hoggets, to 30s 6d; good s.m. three-quar-terbred ewes, with lambs, 17s Gd to 19s; good s.m. halfbred ewes, with lambs, 17s to 17s 7d; medium s.m. halfbred ewes, with lambs, to 16s; ordinary s.m. halfbred ewes, with lambs, to 13s 6d; two-toothed halfbred wethers, to 23s 6d. Spring lambs—The entry totalled 100. Consequent upon the shorter supply than last week the prices hardened. The top price was 37s lOd. Fat sheep. —There was a shorter yarding- than usual and the demand was brisk. Lighter wethers showed an increase of up to Is a head. Other values were on a par with last week. Extra heavy prime wethers made to 51s 9d; prime heavy wethers, 40s- to 465; me-dium-weight prime wethers, 36s to 39s Gd; ordinary wethers. 31s Gd to 355; light wethers, 25s to 30s; extra prime ewes, to '42s lOd; medium ewes, 28s to 345; light ewes, 23s to 275; hoggets, 25s to 28s; good shorn wethers, 30s to 365; ordinary shorn wethers, 24,8 to 295. Fat cattle. —An entry of 320, a large proportion coming from- outside the province. Prices for cows and heifers fully maintained last week’s rates, while heavy prime steers showed a decline of up to £1 a head. The sale showed an all-round easing toward the close. Vealers. —A moderate yarding and a satisfactory sale on the basis of last week’s values. Medium 12 to 18-months calves ranged from 50s to 70s; others from 15s to 45 s. Store cattle. —A fair entry and a good sale. Dairy Cattle.—A small yarding with a brisk demand. Exceptionally good second and third culvers made to £18; others, £9 to £l5 10s; best heifers, to £l3 10s; others, £4 15s to £ll. Fat pigs.—A large .entry of pork and a small entry of baconers. Prices were a little easier. Choppers made £3 10s to £9 Ils 6d; baconers, £3 15s to £5 12s 6d; average price per lb, 7d to 7JdPorkers made 42s to 68s 6d; average price per lb, fid to 9£d. 6d to 27s 6d; weaners, 15s 6<l to 24s 6d. JOHNSONVILLE PRICES. ■ Wellington, Oct. 9. At the "Johnsonville stock sale today there was a large attendance of buyers. A full yarding of all classes of stock was submitted. The quality of the cattle was better than last week, and taking this into consideration the prices must be considered easier as compared with the last sale. The quality of the sheep offered was good, comprising mostly medium to heavy weight wethers, with a few pens of heavy weight ewes. Competition was good at last week’s rates. Spring lambs were yarded in larger numbers than previously, aud met with a fair sale.
