STAR FOOTBALL FUNCTION

END-OF-SEASON DINNER HELD. The members of the Star Football Club’s senior team had a most enjoyable conclusion to the season’s activities on Saturday night, when Mr. and Mrs. Wallis, of the Royal piotel, .tendered the team a complimentary dinner. The host and hostess had spared neither effort nor expense to make the dinner a success, and those preesiit did full justice to the repast provided. After the main business of the evening had been, attended to, a short toast list was gone through under the chairmanship of the club captain, Mr. McLean. The following were the toasts honoured: —The King; The Host and Hostess, proposed by Mr. McLean and responded to, in the absence of Mr. Wallis, by Mrs. Wallis; The Senior Team, Mr. H. J. Paterson—Mr. C. Hunt; The Team Manager and Coach, Mr. Hunt—Mr. Court; Taranaki Rugby Union, Mr. Crone —Mr. McLean; The Club Captain and The Secretary, Mr. Russell —Messrs. McLean and Paterson; The Ladies, Mr. K. Harvey. Songs were rendered by Messrs. C. Clarke and Murphy. During the evening the opportunity was taken to say good-bye to Mr. George Phillips, a valued member of the team, who had been transferred to Rotorua. In handing Mr. Phillips suitable parting gifts for Mrs. Phillips and himself from his fellow-members, the chairman made reference to the recipient’s high sense of sportsmanship. He had set a very fine example to the younger _ club members, and would carry with him the best ■wishes of his club-mates. _ Before the close of the proceedings Mr. H. F. McLean was extended the congratulations of his team-nlates; ..on attaining’ All Black status, and was inade the recipient of a mascot souvenir fiom the hostess. ; ' ’
