SPRING CARNIVAL RACES

HISTORIC WINS MITCHELSON CUP EAGLET ANNEXES THIRD GUINEAS PH AR LAP AND NIGHTMARCH SCORE Both in the Dominion and in Australia the big spring carnivals, with their rich classic races, opened on Saturday. At Ellerslie racing was superb, and in the .majority of cases the good horses came into their own. Historic won the Mitchelson Cup in a stirring finish from Star Stranger, both horses registering smart performances. The Guineas saw th,e brilliant Auckland filly, Eaglet, take her third race of this description this season and account for the Southern hope, Pink Coat. Royal Ruler won the Welcome Stakes from the Hawera two-year-old, Chief Link, but the public were astray in sorting out the winners of the two sprint races, Lady’s Boy and Otairi paying good prices. At the Napier Park meeting Shrewd won the big race, the Park Stakes,-and the Railway Handicap went to Merry Damon. In Australia the New Zealand contingent "picked the plums” of the programme, Pbar Lap winning the A J.C. Derby from Carradale and Honour, and Nightmarch confounding the critics by winning the Epsom Handicap from a big field of brilliant performers.

(By Wire. —Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. Some splendid racing featured the opening of the spring carnival at Ellerslie to-day. Most of the winners were well backed, although the wins of Catonian and Otairi were attended with substantial dividends. Eaglet scored her fifth successive win in the Guineas and another Chief Ruler representative in Royal Ruler accounted for the Welcome Stakes. Historic won the Mitchelson Cup after a fine tussle with Star Stranger and pointedly demonstrated that he is one of the best distance performers in the Dominion at present. An outsider in Catonian effected a big surprise in the Trial Hurdles, for which Golden Wedding and Lady Spalpeen were best backed. Cybele, 1 Golden Wedding and Lady Spalpeen lost a lot of ground at the start, The Lamb leading to the first fence where he fell and brought down Ah Wera, Te Kawana, Sir Archie, Cybele and Harbour View. Catonian and Master Doon made the running from a strung-out field in which Golden Wedding and Lady Spalpeen were moving through gradually. Golden Wedding was going well within striking distance when she toppled over at the fifth fence, and at this stage Catonian began to draw away. Catonian was ten lengths clear at the turn and won by four lengths from Lady Spalpeen, who beat Gold Rep by twelve lengths. Waltzer was fourth and Farndon fifth. The win|ner was making his first appearance as I a hurdler and returned a dividend in the i vicinity of half a century. Lady Spalpeen would probably have won with a decent getaway, although she might not have beaten Golden Wedding if the latter had not fallen. EAGLET BEATS RINK COAT. Pink Coat was heavily backed in the Great Northern Guineas, being about £650 better backed than Eaglet. False Scent was slow to move, Eaglet being first away to lead for about a furlong, when Leader and Pink Coat took charge. Leader and Pink Coat were out four lengths from Eaglet at the half mile and they were still in command at tire turn, where Eaglet had moved up slightly. Once in line for the post Pink Coat had Leader beaten, but was challenged at the distance by Eaglet. It looked as if Eaglet was going to come away, but Pink Coat hung on well under pressure and Eaglet beat him only by half a length. Hunting Cry -was seven lengths away third, with Leader fourth and the others well beaten. This was Eaglet’s fifth successive victory this season and she is undoubtedly good. Pink Coat is also good and it was not in his favour when he was taken to the front on the outside of Leader. Ridden in behind he would certainly have taken more beating, and horsemanship no doubt played a part in Eaglet’s win. GREAT FINISH IN SHORTS. Lady Quex was a slightly better favourite than Awarere for the Shorts Handicap, with High Finance third choice. High Finance and Vallar were prominent early, with Polyxena, Takutama, Awarere and Lady’s Boy handy. Takutama and High Finance led a bunched field into the straight, and when they

straightened up the horses spread across the course. A great finish was fought out, Lady’s Boy securing the verdict by a head from Takutama. High Finance and Polyxena were placed a dead heat for third another head away. Havering was right up on the outside. Billikins, Kingfield, Te Atiawa, Gold Money and Roi de Vai were almost in line next. It looked as if the judge mistook Polyxena who finished well back, for Value, who was right up on the rails. It was one of the best spring races seen at Ellerslie for some time and fully eleven horses had winning chances in the last furlong. HISTORIC’S MITCHELSON CUP. Heavy wagering on the Mitchelson Cup saw Prince Humphrey a slightly tetter favourite than Historic, with Star Stranger also heavily backed. High Pitch, Amor and Talisker raced abreast in the lead for about a mile, with Desert Glow, Historic, Prince Humphrey and Star Stranger handy. High Pitch and Amor were first round the bend from Desert Glow, Historic and Star Stranger. Historic came through on the rails at the distance and stalled off Star Stranger to win by a neck. Amor was three lengths away third, with Singleton fourth, then coining Desert Glow, High Pitch and Piuthair. Historic was always well placed on the rails and responded in great style when asked for a final effort. Star Stranger ran a stinging race and might have won w'ith the same run as Historic had. Amor made a good showing and,-should win a handicap soon. Prince., Humphrey failed badly ami was beaten at. the turn. Piuthair tailed the field most of the way but might have been third but for getting stopped in the .straight. POMPEIUS BEATS SEA COMET. . Pompeius was a good favourite for the Hunters’ Steeplechase, with Sea Comet and Soami also weir backed. Tin Whistle led for over a round, and then Marita took charge. . Maiita, Pompeius, Sea Comet and Calithe. came over the stonewall into the straight in close company and there was little between them at the last feuce. Then Sea Comet gained a slight advantage, but he ran right away from the whip at the finish and Pompeius beat him by a neck. Calithe was five lengths away , third and Marita was fourth. Odin, Lucess, Foxhound, Rayonnant and King Fame all fell, Rayonnant breaking a leg and being destroyed. ROYAL RULER’S STAKES. Chrysology, Imamint and Royal Ruler were best backed for the Welcome Stakes. Royal Ruler and Isa began quickest and were the leaders to the straight, with Imamint, Chief Link and Cylinder in close attendance. There was nothing between the first four inside the distance, but Royal Ruler stayed on well to win by half a length from Chief Link, who beat Imamint by a neck. Isa was fourth, followed by Cylinder, Valmarie and Chrysology. Royal Ruler won well. Chief Link had to cover a fair amount of ground on the outside, otherwise he would have been more troublesome. PRINCE VAL SCORES WELL. Prince Vai was a strong favourite for tlie Gordon Handicap, with Sea Cob and Brampton also in demand. Red Lion made the running and was first into the straight from Prince Vai, Kaiwanga and Sea Cob. Prince Vai drew out in the straight to win by a length and a quarter from Red Lion, who beat Sea Cob by half a length. Currajong was running on in fourth place, followed by Arikitoa and Some Lady. Prince Vai is good and should win in better company. " OTAIRI BEATS REREMOANA. Reremoana was a hot favourite for the Flying Handicap, being over twice as well backed as the second choice, Merry Mint. Reremoana, Lucy Rose and Mithra were prominent early and then Otairi took charge. Otairi led into the straight from Merry Mint, Reremoana and Eager Rose. Otairi gave nothing a chance at the finish and won easily by two and a half lengths from Reremoana. Mervette, wide out, was a neck away third, and Respirator -was fourth. Then came Lucy Rose and Ohinemuri. The winner was at a double figure price and this was a surprise in view of his recent good form. Reremoana had every chance and met one too good at the weights. Mervette was unlucky. Merry Mint did not jump out too well, but after running through quickly to a good position he faded at the finish. • J m-’ AUCKLAND FIELDS TO-DAY. •' By Telegraph.—Press Association Auckland, Last Night. The Auckland Racing Club’s second day acceptances are: — ONEHUNGA STEEPLES.

PROSPECTS FOR ELLERSLIE. (By “Moturoa.”) Sea Comet went well on Saturday and may set a solid pace in the Onehunga Steeples- for Askari and Town Rambler. * ft * * Chief Link should be improved by the outing on the opening day and may be preferred, conceding ten pounds to Chrysology. ft * * * Amor and Lucy Rose will have friends in the King Edward Handicap, but Star Stranger will probably be heavily backed. * * ft * Silvermine may do better than did Lady Quex on Saturday, though the latter galloper may be benefited by the smaller field. Awarere also may improve. * # * # Elysianor is expected by his party to play a big part in the Manakau Hurdles, though Horomea and King’s Guard are a good pair at the weight. ft # ft ft Kawainga may do better than on Saturday, and the consistent Sea Cob and Arikitoa may run well in a weak field for the -Normanby Handicap. # ft * ft Good Boy, Refresher and Currajong look likely to be a favoured trio in the Hobson Handicap. ft ♦ • * Mervette is improving, and the halfsister to Historic may go well in the Liverpool Handicap to-day. Dangerous opponents may be Havering and King Emerald. WELLINGTON SPRING MEETING. PRINCIPAL NOMINATIONS.
