STRATFORD.CLUB MEETING. The annual meeting of the Stratford Croquet Club was held yesterday. Mrs. L. Riera presided over a good attendance of . members. The annual report commented upon the satisfactory state of the club’s finances due to the efforts of the -members in raising funds -by entertainments and shop days for improvements to the lawns and building. The lawns laid down last year had been re-levelled, and again 1 p-dressed under the supervision .of the borough foreman (Mr. L. B. Davis). -These would shortly, be ready for play. Th'e top lawns‘had been attended to and were in excellent condition. Inter-club matches had .been played with the Eltiiairf and the Avon'Clubs.' Four of-the club members had attended the South Taranaki tuornament at Ha-, wefa and Mesdames Burgess and Morrison were to be complimented o:.. having won the handicap doubles. ' . In the home inatches Mrs. . Weston had won the senior cup with Mrs. Bur-, the runner-up. Mrs.* Burgess had won the junior cup, Mrs. Bamford-hav-ing been runner-up.. Weston; honorary auditor, Mr. ■T; H. Penn. Opening day will be October 30.- - GENERAL ITEMS. While pulling a wheel off a vehicle, Mr. M. Kovaleski, Stratford, had the misfortune to jamb his little finger, losing the first, joint. The Rev. J. Boothroyd will preach in the Stratford Methodist Church to-moi-row morning and at Midhirst to-morrow night he will preach the annual Home Misssion sermon and relate some of his experiences in the Murchison district a few years ago. Arrangements have been made whereby car owners can have their speedometers tested by driving oyer a measured mile. It is hoped to have this effected in the very near future. The location will be on' tiie East Road just outside the Stratford borough boundary and suitable signs will be erected' for the I guidance of motorists. In the course of the annual report of the Stratford branch of the South Taranaki Automobile Association it is stated that the Stratford Domain Board has decided to erect suitable buildings and necessary conveniences on the Page Street part- of King Edward Park, and the work will be completed by the coming tourist season. “With such fine surroundings this camping site, recognised as being one of the most beautifully situated in the district, will be made full use of by visitors. The establishing of the camp will, we feel sure, assist the town and tradespeople generally, added the report.
