BOBBIN ANO BALL PUZZLE. Here, is a little puzzle that you can make at home in a very short time, but it will take your friends a long time to do the trick when it is fini lied! Obtain a large wooden thread reel and a small steel ball. Drill a hole in the reel near the centre of its length,, as indicated in the sketch, making this holo just large enough to allow the ball to fall into it easily but not too loose! v.

Now make an outer covering for the reel from an old photographic film, firstcleaning the latter in warm water and hanging it up so that it may dry without creasing. When dry, wrap the film round the broad ends of the reel to get it the correct size and secure it • with a few turns of . cotton. Slide the film off the reel, fix the it in with glue, and leave to dry. Put the small steel ball into the hole in the reel, apply glue to the broad ends, and slide the tube ovdv tho whole, as shown. Cut off any surplus film and make sure that the join is quite firm. Now try to work the puzzle—which is to turn tho covered reel round and about until you arc able to slide the steel ball into the hole. It can be done, but not easily! LOVELY WORDS. THE GOLDEN HIND. Have you ever noticed what lovely sounds some words have? They seem to stick in your mind, and make you think of all sorts of wonderful things. What do' you think of the words Golden Hind? Just say them over to yourself, and you will immediately imagine something swift and lovely—perhaps a pure golden deer fleeing through an enchanted forest. Well, Golden Hind was the name given by Sir Francis Drake to the famous ship in which he sailed round the world. Queen Elizabeth dined with him aboard, and no doubt she wished him good luck, giving the honour of her country into the keeping of the Golden Hind and the ship’s bravo master. Drake was the first Englishman to go right around the world, and to prove practically that the earth is round. After nearly three years on the sea, the Golden Hind brought her master safely back.
