FARMERS’ TROPHIES PRESENTED. YOUNG PEOPLE’S COMPETITIONS. --- V .Decrated with streamers, the dance hall and the card room of the Hillsborough Hall presented a gay scene last, night when the members of the Farmers’ Union and the school committee combined 'to make the presentation of the ... . prizes won in the fields competition of the Farmers’ Union and tho Girls’ and Boys’ Clubs, and school competitions during the year, the prizes being donated by the Farmers’ Union. • - The younger folk, who were strongly represented, testified to the interest taken in the competitions and made merry throughout the evening, dancing to a delightful musical programme rendered by Martin’s orchestra. Blyde, Miss KiL patrick and Mr. McKeen, the acconir paniments being played by Mrs. Sor- . renson. •A euchre tournament attracted the adults, the prizes being won by Messrs. Fraser 1, and Davis 2, and Miss Sampson 1, and Mrs. Sampson and Mrs. Ballsom equal 2. ‘ . Supper was provided by the ladles of the district, Mesdames H, C. Sampson, Stanley, Skelton, Sorrenson, Roth-, ery, Hale, T. Sampson, Proud, H. .J. March, L. March, Misses Daisy Samp- . son and C. Stanley being among those responsible. After supper the presentation of the prizes was made. The president of the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs, Mr. C. H. Washer, in presenting the trophies, apologised for the absence of Mr. Ridling. He. congratulated Harold Marsh and incidentally the district on winning the framed , certificate for the-dairy type. Ho spoke to the children on tlie subject of rearing calves. The entries in the competitions were increasing each year. This season a new section had been added in tho classification of pedigree Jersey calves. In the root competitions there was also an increase and swedes had been added to the list of crops. Mr. Washer also presented the prizes won in the district competitions, tho trophies being donated by the Hillsborough branch, of the Farmers’ Union. Mr. Stanley spoke on behalf of the school committee and thanked Mr. Washer for going out to make the presentations; , , • Mr. H. C. Sampson, chairman of the branch of the Farmers’ Union, introduced Mr. H. E. Blyde, president or the Farmers’ Union. Mr. Blyde said he was pleased to note the increase in the entries in . the district. The district had been very backward in tho past and there was no doubt that the compoti-. tions were a benefit to all farmers. In entering for the competitions the'farmers took a pride in their entries and took just a little more care, thereby improving their crops. Hillsborough had not yet won a cup in the competitions, but he trusted the farmers would come forward in far greater numbers’ next year and that on the next occasion ho would bo able to present a cup. Tho certificates, he said, were issued by the Department of Agriculture, and he apologised for the absence of the instructor, Mr. J. M.. Smith. Mr. Sampson expressed the hope that Mr. Blyde’s remarks would be taken to heart and that they would take even more interest in the/competitions next year.
